I took the Spuds to the vet last night for their first set of shots. It is Amanda’s guess that these puppies are lab mixes, or possibly skipper keys although she suspects labs first. Tater Tot obviously is taking after her mom whereas Bud, Russet & Idaho take after their dads. Their current weight (over 5# with Tater Tot being 3#) is the same as the Barns puppies were at this age so they will probably end up being around the 25# mark. Tater Tot may end up being 15#. Bud and Russet have tall legs. Idaho has squatty legs and is the heaviest.

Anyone interested in a cute, likeable, sweet puppy, APPLY NOW. They will need to be in a family with another young dog so that they learn appropriate manners.

Well, after all of the puppies came down with a mild upper respiratory infection, they went onto oral antibiotics for several days. They now seem to be over it and we’re praying that since they never saw the inside of a shelter, it was simple kennel cough. Hope, hope. Here’s this week’s update from Ja…
My babies are growing as evidenced by the show of bellies while they are sleeping. Little Tater Tot sleeps a lot with her belly in the air - just too cute for words. MacKenzie has finally, after 2 1/2 weeks, decided not to be so nervous about being a mommy. I think she finally has the hang of it but don’t let that fool you, she is not one to be with her babies 24/7. I would have to agree with the vet’s estimation that MacKenzie is still a puppy herself - at about a year old - so it is no surprise that she wants to wonder around. MacKenzie has found a new way to feed them now that they are getting bigger and that is to stand. As uncomfortable as it looks for the puppies to be stretching up to eat, they seem to get the job done. I am going to start feeding them this week with a gruel. I gave the puppies a new experience over the weekend and took them out of their kennels and put them on the kitchen floor. Well immediately they all had to potty and after that they all crawled around crying. I would have to say, based on their vocal opinions, that they did not like the travertine tile. When I scratch their backs and rub their ears, Idaho, Bud and Tater Tot all play growl with me. It is so fun to hear their tiny little voices. They are still doing a lot of sleeping - the lull before the storm.

As of yesterday, all of the Spuds’ babies have started to open their eyes. Bud is turning out to be quite the toot. He is very vocal when he has to potty and his momma doesn’t seem to get to upset about it. He screams and cries and whines. After waiting a few minutes for MacKenzie to take over, I finally push him into her face. You can almost see the sigh of relief on his big ole face and then he falls asleep right away . MacKenzie is very protective of her babies however she certainly exhibits a lot of inexperienced mom behavior. She would almost rather not be in the kennel with them opting for roaming around the house instead (I think she is ADD). Little Tater Tot’s belly is so cute (she is the little black one with all the white markings). Idaho and Russet look so much alike that I have painted red nail polish on Russet’s head to tell them apart. All except Idaho have a minor upper respiratory infection and none of them like the medication. They spit it out or it comes out in bubbles and they all shake their heads back and forth as if the taste were not to their liking. This Sunday (3/11/07) they will be 2 weeks old and each one of them has more than doubled their weight. They are little pigs when it comes to eating and not very tolerant if not fed when they think it is time.
Check them out…

From her foster mom:
MacKenzie is a nervous and frantic mom. She pants a lot and just can’t get herself settled down into a routine. She will sit with her babies for a time and then be up moving around in the kennel. I let her out and she is so obsessed with her babies that she wants back in the kennel. Then she wants out again. Still racing like the Indy 500 to get back to her babies. After giving MacKenzie a few drops of Rescue Remedy, I sat with her on the floor this morning just gently holding her and petting her (yes, amongst the wiggles). I then put her back in the kennel with her babies and put her babies up to her belly. I sat there for about 10 minutes again gently patting her and talking to her. That seemed to quiet the nerves in her for about 15-20 minutes but by the time I left for work, they were back in full force. I plan to search the internet and ask a few professionals what I can further do to help this new, very nervous, mommy. The good new is that all of the Spuds family slept in the master bedroom last night and once everyone fell asleep, it was total quiet for the entire nite.
I can tell who Bud is, of course. And Tater Tot because of her white facial markings. But Idaho and Russet look so much alike to me and they are about the same size. I am going to have put neck bands on them with their names to tell them apart.
They certainly are a good looking family, aren’t they?

Within 2 hours of starting actual delivery, MacKenzie delivered 4 babies. All are healthy and doing well. 3 little girls (Russet Spuds, Tater Tot Spuds and Idaho Spuds) and the last one was a boy (Bud Spuds). The girls weighed 4 1/2 oz., 7 oz. and 6 oz. respectively and Bud weighs 8 oz. It is obvious to me that MacKenzie has not been a mommy before but I am sure she will get the hang of it. All are not nestled up next her belly eating and keeping warm. MacKenzie is somewhat cranky if I come near her and her babies.
Please help with her vet bills HERE! So far, we’re still down by $800 for her. HELP

Yep, that’s right! I just got the following email from Lovey MacKenzie Spuds’ foster mom:
(Lovey MacKenzie) has started early labor. 2 hours ago she roamed the house for her birthing spot and settled in the closet in the master bath (same place Momma Belle gave birth). Her temperature had dropped to 99.37. She is quivering now but is in her box that I have made for her and she seems to like it. Got a soft lamp in there, soft music and everything else that I could possibly need.
I thought we had a few more days to raise the funds for her vetting, but help!!! Now we are going to need it much quicker!
Please consider adding to her fund!!

As of 10:00 pm, our funds are growing for these three deserving little fluffs.
Felecity and Tootie’s fund is at $315 right now, about 25% of where they need to be by mid week next week. Thanks Dana, Barbara, Martin (always there for all of the dogs), and Kristen!!
Little pregnant Lovey MacKenzie has $195 but she and her four little baby fluffs still need $800 before next week. She’s very thankful to Sharon, Cat, Martin, Barbara and Brandy.

Update, 3:00 pm, Friday.
We are slowly making progress on rounding up enough to pay for these sweeties vetting. So far, Lovey has $150 toward the $1000 we think we need for her vetting and that of the puppies. Thanks Cat and Barbara!!
The two cherry eye girls, Felicity and Tootie, have $50 toward their surgery. THANKS Barbara.
Here is a little update on her trek to Lone Star from her new foster mom….
Smashed up french fries (hence the name Lovey MacKenzie Spuds) looked and tasted like caviar to this starving, pregnant mom who was eating them in a Denton, Texas apartment parking lot, next to the dumpster, when she was found. The sonogram indicates she is pregnant with 4 babies. She was filthy with long matted and cockaburred fur. Even though she had been a stray, spent 7 days at a vet’s office and then came into rescue, she allowed me to groom her without incident. She is a sweet as they come although the snap of a camera is something that frightens her. She also is very curious of the back door. It is obvious (from the way she rides in cars, walks on a leash and is polite) that she was someone’s well cared for dog and I believe she is trying to get back to her owner. Once those babies arrive, she will not care about that any longer. The vet estimates she will deliver within the next 7 days. According to his measurements, MacKenzie should do fine with the delivery as the babies are not as big as originally anticipated. Now we wait for her temperature to drop and the babies to arrive. Other than being pregnant, she is a healthy girl and so polite. I like to gently rub her belly and tell her that I know she has babies in there. She seems to like that as it is soothing to her.

We confirmed it today, this little gal is coming into rescue TOMORROW - Friday. No one else wanted her, no one else wanted the risk of a pregnant lhasa with four LARGE puppies - ready to be born. SO, we’re picking her up.
Guys, we need help. We have one donation, THANKS CAT!!, so far for this gal and desperately need to know that we have enough to vet her and those LARGE babies - don’t know what this sweet little girl has been bred by but we think she’s enough lhasa to make up for just about anything. We need another $900 or so to be able to take care of them. HELP.
If you can help, please donate via paypal HERE. Or GO HERE to send her a check.
And, ALERT, ALERT, we may have to do a c-section. You never know whats going to happen when a sweet fluff has been bred to a possibly much larger dog. The vet estimates the c-section at around $700 but we’ll let you know if it comes down to requiring a c-section to save her life.

We got an urgent email last night…
This little girl was found as a stray. She appears to be a Lhasa Apso or Mix and to be around 2 years old. She weighs 17 pounds. She was starving when she was found and scarfed up whatever food she was given like she had not eaten in days. She was given a sonogram and heartbeats were detected so she is pregnant, although they are not yet sure how far along she is. This little girl was found as a stray. This girl still needs a place to go. The vet looked at her today and says she is 5-10 days away from delivering. There are four puppies, and they are big for her size so she may need help delivering them. Momma dog is pretty grumpy right now.
Again, we expect quite a bit vetting bill for her and four puppies. We need to get her today!!! We’re expecting at least $1000 to vet her and the puppies and possibly more depending on problems she might have.
If you can help, please donate via paypal HERE. Or GO HERE to send her a check.
Her name is Lovey!!
