Little Shih Tzu Puppies growing strong!! Update on the Katy 34 breeder surrenders!

Are fluffy puppies not just the cutest things alive???

The breeder in Katy had two tiny litters when we were asked to take in her dogs.  The puppies are now nine weeks old and getting their second round of shots.  They’ll get the third in three weeks and then be spayed/neutered soon after that.

The adults are just as cute as these puppies…

These little dogs have adapted well to pet life.

Deogi 2-18-2009-1022.JPG

Watching these little dogs, both the adults and the puppies, blossom into adorable, loving little dogs is an unbelievably rewarding experience.  Little Omari, the little black boy above, had a massive ulcer on his right eye when we first picked him up.  So bad, in fact, I thought it looked like there was a little stick poking out of his eye.  Thankfully, after putting a special medicine from the opthalmologist into his eye about every two hours, we were able to save the eye.  This tiny boy was about four pounds when we first got him, but has put on quite a bit and is now right at six pounds.  He runs and plays with everyone.  He just has a huge zest for life.

So far, with the funds we have, including a very generous $600 donation from the American Shih Tzu Club (thanks Loree and Barbara!!) we’ve been able to get 14 of the adults completely vetted.

We, thankfully have had no extraordinary problems with these guys.  Most had to have antibiotics for some kind of infection, several had eye ulcers, but thankfully no broken bones.

Little Hasani is totally blind – genetic bi-lateral detached retinas.  But, don’t tell him.  He has no idea he’s blind.

Isn’t he just a DOLL!  We’ve nicknamed him Sonny and he is a true “liver” shih tzu with a cute little brown nose.  He is the daddy of many of the little puppies.  This little boy must have an internal radar because even being 100% blind, he can find us the minute we walk into the room.  It’s just so cute.  Sonny was also the one that had severe urine scalding all over his belly from a very old, very wet belly band.

I just wonder what goes through the minds of these little dogs when they are in transition.  I truly believe that they only live “in the moment” and don’t even remember their past.  I’m glad.

We are now trying to raise the funds to vet the remainder of these little pups.  And, as you would all expect, with tough times, we’re in a world of hurt.

Making Progress – the Katy 34 shih tzu are absolutely adorable!!

Posted in Katy 34 Jan 2009 at 7:14 am by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

Dakari Katy.JPG

Well, these babies are absolutely adorable and getting extremely friendly.  Most do not know how to walk on a leash, but are learning very quickly.  Once we got the mats cut off of them, they felt so much better.  Above is little Dakari.

This little sweetie is Irisi.  She was initially very shy, but now is a love bug!

Hasini Katy.JPG

This is the MOST adorable Hasani, nicknamed “Sonny.”  When we found him, he had a bandage or belly band wrapped around his middle and there were open oozing sores and urine scalding all over his belly.

Special thanks to Jamie and Cate, two youngsters who, with their grandmother’s help, are helping us with all of the meds for Omari’s punctured eye, all of the cyclosporine for the little fluffies with dry eye, antibiotics for Hasani’s burned and infected tummy, and the meds we need to get rid of 34 cases of tape worms.

The fundraising is going well – as of right now, we have just over $1800 in their fund, thanks to the following….

OH MY GOODNESS! 34, yes 34, little shih tzu need us NOW!!

Posted in Katy 34 Jan 2009 at 4:51 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

DSC_0031.JPG

Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse – first the economy in Texas is HORRIBLE – people are leaving the city and abandoning their little dogs in the back yards.  Then the holidays hit and there are TONS of little dogs left at the local shelters – we are already overflowing with dogs.  And, with the economy so bad, adoptions are WAY DOWN.  And, with the not-so-rosey outlook for the near future economy, donations are WAY down.  And, we have SIX little broken or ill dogs that we need to raise funds for (Gingerbread’s myleogram and wheel cart, Grainger’s stay in ICU for pneumonia, Alamo’s surgery to remove the pin fron his leg, Tapioca’s heartworm treatment and Monkey and Pate’s rehabilitation exercises twice a week in the water treatmill.

Then along comes 34 little shih tzu that desperately need somewhere to go.

Can you believe?!?!?!?

I received an email early this morning from a very nice lady who informed me that a lady of her church had had a heart attack and was in the hospital.  This lady was a breeder of shih tzu and had 34, yes 34, shih tzu living alone at her home.  The friend sounded totally desperate – and kept saying that they needed to do something asap for these little dogs.

So, I drove out to the little town outside of Houston where this former breeder lived and evaluated all of the 34 dogs.  Here are just a few pictures….

So, here’s the dilemma – we MUST raise the funds for our existing dogs AND the funds to vet as many of these little dogs as possible.

The prior owner is hospitalized and there is NO ONE to care for these dogs now.  The home is vacant.  The dogs are living in the back yard under a shed and we MUST get them out.

But we absolutely MUST raise the funds for the other little broken dogs asap too.

We estimate that it will cost around $400 per dog to vet them IF THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS.  We looked all through the lady’s house today and did not find any type of heartworm preventative.  We are just so hoping that these dogs do not have heartworms.

So, PLEASE, PLEASE help us help these little babies.

We not only need funds, we desperately need foster homes for them as well.  Because of the proximity, our preference for foster homes is in Texas, Louisiana and Arizona where we already have an extensive network.  Please think about it.  Also, understand that we MUST have all new fosters go through the same approval process as all of the current fosters.  Email me at Teresa@shihtzu-rescue.com if you think you might be able to foster one or more of these little puppers.

I know times are tough now, but these little guys NEED YOU!!  If you can help with their funding, please CLICK HERE to contribute via paypal or HERE to tell me you’re sending a check.

If you can help the others, read about GINGERBREAD WORTH HERE, or the little TAPICOA DAVIS HERE, or PATE DAVIS HERE, or ALAMO BEXAR HERE or or the very lucky miracle boy MONKEY HARRIS HERE, or the unbelievably cute GRAINGER TURNER HERE.

Thanks  so much!!
