CHANTILLY WORTH - ADOPTED!! ANOTHER GREAT SAVE!

Posted in Uncategorized, Chantilly Worth at 8:31 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

ChantillyWorthAdopted.jpg

Remember Chantilly Worth?  She almost died of pneumonia just over a month ago.  This lucky girl was adopted today!  Here is the report from her foster mom, Patricia.

Tilly was very nervous on the way to meet the Daigreponts.  Since the Daigreponts had contacted me earlier this week, I had been telling Tilly that someone was interested in being her new family.  She was doubtful, but I reminded her that I was only a pitstop on the way to her awesome forever home.  However, when she laid eyes on them, it was love at first sight for all of them.  Within minutes, I was non-existent to Tilly, who had eyes only for Ken & Ann.  They, in turn, were immediately smitten. The Daigreponts drove up from Houston to meet Tilly.  We met at her son’s house in Richardson.  They came prepared: new collar, tag, harness, leash, toys, bed, crate, chewies, food/water dishes, & kibble.  They told me they use VCA in Houston, & know the medical director personally, & already have her initial visit planned. (Tilly was in the hospital here at the VCA Metroplex). By the time I left the house, Tilly was attached to Ken’s lap & seemed to be planning her reign as queen of her new domain.  She had even already begun sharing guard dog duties with her niece, Daisy, an awfully cute terrie-poo.  As I said good-bye to her, she looked at me & seemed to say, “And you are?

Please excuse me, I have my family to tend to….”  These are the kinds of stories we work for!

Chantilly Worth - another dog alive because of you!!

Posted in Chantilly Worth at 9:56 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

ChantillyWorth9-17-2007-1.jpg

Here is an update on the CUTE CHANTILLY WORTH - who has now recovered from pneumomia!!

Chantilly continues to be a delight.

She has done a great job gaining weight… she weighs almost 18 pounds now, & still looks a little thin, probably because she is so long.  She loves to eat.

She spins in circles when she is excited.  Her tail is constantly whirling around like a helicopter blade.  She has that nice Shih Tzu wiggle when she walks, too.  And, Tilly is a prancer.  She also does this strange little thing when she is excited:  she bows as in a play bow, then, while she keeps her forearms on the ground & butt in the air, she pushes herself with her hind legs; her front end glides along the floor… for several feet at a time.  At first I thought she was slipping on the smooth floor due to her furry feet.  But she got a trim up at Pretty Paws, & still does it.
Though she exhibits her excitement in various ways, she absolutely does not jump up on me, which is excellent.
And slippers, well, she loves slippers, especially if they are being worn & are mobile.  Oh, Tilly loves her other toys.  She has them spread throughout the house.  She usually has one in her mouth as she prances around, and when she comes upon another toy in another room, she promptly drops the one she is carrying to get the other one.  Then it’s on to another room, and the cycle continues.  She will abandon all for a live slipper, though.
ChantillyWorth9-17-2007-2.jpg

Tilly gets along famously with the other dogs in my house.  She is always polite, except she does like to eat the others’ food; even then, she is polite about it.  Tilly knows she eats her meals in her kennel, so runs & leaps into her kennel when it’s meal time.  Yes, she leaps, like a little antelope.
She also is maintaining excellent housebreaking manners.  She is well versed on pet portal usage, too.  She & my affenpinscher, Teddy, still work hard at patrolling the yard when I’m home, keeping it safe from intruders.
Tilly loves to be loved.  She will be patient & stay on the giant floor pillow or ottoman… however, once she is given the `ok’ to get up in my lap, she’s there in a flash & snuggles so deeply that it’s hard to get her off when it’s time for bed.  Though it’s hard for both of us, I’m still not letting her sleep in the bed with me, simply because her adoptive family may not want that behaviour.  She would make an excellent bed snuggler, though.

As I hold her & love on her, I think to myself that someone must need this little dog very, very much.  I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason; even though Chantilly has been through an ordeal of being ripped from the home life she once knew, and moved from various scarey places, perhaps that was the only way to ensure that she gets to where God wants her to be.  When I tell Tilly that someone needs her very much, & that it’s a special dog who can come through an ordeal just to get her to that person, she just gazes at me & then leans into me for more snuggles.  I suppose you have noticed that I used the word “love” a lot in this update.  Tilly is just pure love through & through.

Hopefully her forever family will adopt her soon, so they can start basking in the joy of a shared life with this great dog.

Update on Chantilly Worth - another that YOU saved!!

Posted in Chantilly Worth at 9:55 am by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

Chantilly has blossomed into a beautiful personality (and dog).  Each day I am amazed that this is the same dog that I brought to the ED about a week and a half ago.  Chantilly is a prime example of why people fail fostering 101.

That sick little bag of bones with the big bobble head hairdo is filling out nicely.  She has quite the appetite, & knows how to work it for a treat.

Her darker markings are more slate than black on her head, & along her back there is a lot of taupe mixed in.  So, when her fur gets to the short fluffy stage, she will be utterly gorgeous.

Personality?  She oozes it.  And it’s good personality, too.  I equate it to gentile southern belle personality:  miss manners, friendly, respectful of her housemates, & offers unsolicited affection if allowed.  She ”plays well with others”, which translates into: she is polite to my furbies, & has so far made no attempts to dominate anyone.  She loooooves to be petted & massaged.  She allows me to clean her face without any squirming on her part.

Chantilly is a dancer.  She likes to spin & dance when she is happy.  She employs this when she is wanting a treat, too.  She does not jump up, though; another example of excellent manners.

She comes when called.  I have been calling her Tilly, & she responds very well to that.  OK, so, I also call her Tillamook (as in Oregon), thus she is also called Tillamookie my Cookie.  She responds well to that, too.

She has proven herself so far to be house broken.  I have tried the whole “we go out for elimination rounds 30 mins after eating” thing, but she doesn’t play that game.  She goes out with me, then promptly sits then will sprawl out on the grass in a classic lounge pose.  Then, after we go back inside, she heads back out thru the pet door & does her thing.  Silly little Tilly.  She has yet to soil the house.

Tilly still has a bit of a dry cough, but her lungs sound good.   She is still on her antibiotics, which she is taking well, especially the Baytril which I put in a little raw meatball for her.  She has also learned that if she takes her Cleocin drops w/o a struggle, she gets a raw meatball chaser, too.

And, Tilly apparently believes that it is her responsibility to protect me.  She & my little affenpinscher, Teddy, have become bark buddies.  Teddy is deaf, so he depends on signals from others to know when to bark.  Tilly goes outside on backyard patrol with Teddy, & tells him when to bark.  Then, they go at it, keeping the property safe.

Tilly also likes the soft life, aka The Big Chair.  When I’m not looking, & treats have already been dispensed, then next thing I know she is curled up in The Big Chair (down cushions).  She readily hops down when I shoo her off, & she acquiesces to relaxing on the big fluffy floor pillow.  I am  happy to allow this little lover to be on my furniture, but while fostering, I try to instill furniture manners in case that is important to an adopter.  I crate her at night for this reason as well, but Tilly is definitely going to be a snuggler in bed if her forever family allows it.

Since I believe things happen for a reason, there must be someone fabulous out there that desperately needs this little dog in their life.  Whomever Tilly lived with prior has suffered a major loss even if they aren’t aware of it.  Tilly knows about love & trust, & is very good at giving & accepting both.  Her forever family is going to be so in love with this dog.

Jazzy?  Jazzy is still not impressed, LOL.

Chantilly Worth - continues to improve!! Thanks!

Posted in Chantilly Worth at 12:26 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

ChantillyAug26.jpg

Chantilly is definitely feeling much better.  Here is a note from her foster mom!
Notice the difference in today’s photos & the photos taken 1 week ago. (Read her whole story HERE).

She is a little lover.  She also wants what she wants, and wants it when she wants it.  She is not pushy, though… she just exhibits that patience that royalty shows when dealing with ignorant commoners - royalty always has manners, even when dealing with the little people.
I showed her the pet door twice: once to go out, & once to return inside.  She has that down solid, & uses it well.  In line with the “on her own terms” aspect, she so far prefers not to pee/poo when we go out for that specific task… instead, she will go right back out by herself & do her thing (while I supervise from the back door).

ChantillyAug26-2.jpg
Her appetite is excellent, & she loves treats.  When she fills out she will likely be close to 20 lbs.  She is very spry & likes to dance around.  Definitely life has returned to her eyes.
She’s still doing a little bit of a cough, but no discharge from the nose.  The big ulcer on her lower left lip is scabbing over & healing well.  Taking her meds with only minimal fuss, knowing that she will be getting a treat chaser.
She is patient with allowing her face to be cleaned, even around the eyes.

Thanks to all of you for allowing us to save this little girl’s life!!

Chantilly update - back at home and so much improved!! Adorable black and white shih tzu

Posted in Chantilly Worth at 10:41 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

Thanks to the great care from all the staff at VCA Metroplex Animal  Hospital, Chantilly is back at her foster home.   She’s on oral antibiotics, which she is taking without much fuss.  Still with a little cough. Discharge from nose is mostly clear.

She is eating very well, too!

She went straight to the back door for elimination rounds, and seems to be about to catch on to using the pet door.  While she was sprawled out on the grass, she heard activity across the street, & actually started to woof at things.  At present, she is pretty much ignoring my furkids, & they are only moderately interested in her.  Jazzy is still not impressed, & quite indignant about Chantilly’s presence.

Thank you all for allowing us to save the life of this little girl!

Success!! Chantilly’s fund is ok for now!!

Posted in Chantilly Worth at 9:00 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

Today’s update on Chantilly:

She is alert & responsive; stable on O2.  She ate some dinner last nite, but did not eat breakfast this
morning. If she still is not eating by later today, they will start IVF on her.

Hopefully she will be able to be stable on room air by the morning.
We’re keeping fingers, toes and paws crossed that this sweetie pulls through!!

Thanks big time to all of you.  We are close enough in Chantilly’s fund to pay her ER bill and the ICU bill for three days.  Thanks to all of you wonderful dog lovers:  Mary Hailey,  Byron Leger, Fur Kids, John Leech, Donna WILT, Patricia Heitmann, Rebecca Morgan,  Sallie Moore, Melony Robichaux, Melissa Avellan, Impulse Devices, Inc., Julia Skidmore, Maureen Skarzynski, John Stippick, Leanne Little, Wyatt Edenfield, Lael Ward, Annie Phillips, Mary Kay Moore, Sunny Goldberg, Natty Products, Laura Douglas, Christine Hutchinson, Laura Ritchie, Susan Gregory, Julia Skidmore, Lesley Warrin, Doug Cameron, Patricia Havis, Kristin Gerstley, Melissa Lombard, Tiffany Farr, Martin Howard, Cat Martindale, Deborah Knoepfel, Anna Dee Lastick, Jean Day, Juanita Smith, Judy Florence, Debbie Barclay, Sherry Goodpasture, Barbara Detwiler, Bruce and Gay Yancy.

You guys are so great.  The donations keep coming in and I know little Chantilly will be so appreciative when she’s out of the hospital and safe back in her foster home.  I know WE appreciate it.

As of 6:00 this morning, her fund was at $1,975.  Still a tiny bit to raise to cover the $730 ER bill and the $1600 for three days in ICU, but so very close!
Huge thanks to the following for getting her fund where it is right now!!

This is an critical situation, so if you can donate for her emergency fund, please donate HERE via paypal or go HERE to send a check(specify Chantilly Worth)!  We can now take credit cards – American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover.  I’ve uploaded the credit card authorization form.  If you want to use a credit card, please click HERE to down load the form.  You can then fax it to 281-754-4851.  And  email me (Teresa@shihtzu-rescue.com) so I know to look for the fax.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of you.  When I first got the call that she was in distress, I thought “never going to happen.”  I was totally stressed about Cherie (who is back in the hospital, by the way.  She stopped eating over the weekend), and just thought I would not be able to focus on little Chantilly.  Thankfully, you all are making it easy to help her!  We appreciate, so much, each and every one of you.

Chantilly Worth update - Monday, August 20, 2007 - 6 pm CST - Sweet shih tzu fighting for her life!

Posted in Chantilly Worth at 6:20 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

We got an update on Chantilly from the VCA hospital around 3:30 today.  They reported her heart rate, temperature, respiratory levels were all good and she ate really well at 10am this morning.  She had to have her IV replaced as she messed with it a bit.  She seems alert, keeps her head up and looks around in between naps.  Her cough is less frequent, so all sounds to be on the up side for her.
As of 6 pm, her fund is at $1850 and she needs another $480 just to carry her through the next two days in ICU.  PLEASE help us keep this little girl in this very excellent hospital.
Please keep Chantilly in your thoughts and prayers.  We need to save this young cuddle bug so she can bring joy for years to come.  This is an urgent situation, so if you can donate for her emergency fund, please donate HERE via paypal or go HERE to send a check(specify Chantilly Worth)!

Chantilly Transferred with Success

ChantillySick.jpg

We transferred Chantilly to a rescue friendly hospital in the wee hours.  Though it is still expensive, your donated dollars will go a lot further.  We just could not afford $1800 for ONE night in the critical care hospital.  In addition to the $730 dollars to get her out of ER, we will still need $1600 to let her ride this out for the next 3 days.  Please allow us to help this darling little girl.  You can tell by her photo, she is not feeling so good, yet she is a good patient and still gives you feedback with the scratch of her head.  She just lays her little head in your hand to let you know how much she appreciates the love and care being provided.

She is now at the same clinic that helped Charo just a few short months ago.

This is an urgent situation, so if you can donate for her emergency fund, please donate HERE via paypal or go HERE to send a check(specify Chantilly Worth)!!!

Urgent Plea to Help Chantilly

Posted in Chantilly Worth at 6:42 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

 Chantilly1.jpg

Thursday, Sweet Chantilly went to her foster home for some TLC to try to get her well from an upper respiratory infection.  Unfortunately by Sunday, she had dwindled to a point her foster mom knew she needed more help.  Her breathing was labored and she felt very warm.  Once arriving to the emergency vet, x-rays indicated her lungs were completely full and she was not stable enough to be moved to another hospital we have worked with before.  Yep – full blown pneumonia in both lungs, so she was put on IVs and put in ICU isolation.  We are hopeful she will progress quickly to a point her RN foster mom can take over her care, but until then, WE NEED HELP.
Here are details reported by Chantilly’s foster mom:
“This morning sweet Chantilly appeared to be declining.
The discharge from her nares was very copious, in addition to being yellow-green. I noticed that it had been matting up around her chin, not just around her nose; it was also matted on her fore-paws. When I sat with her to try to clean it up, I noticed blood on the wash cloth. I did not see blood from her nares, so it seems to be coming from the left side of her mouth/gums.
I was concerned that she was on the brink of sepsis, considering her cachexia & respiratory compromise. Though she was drinking lots of water, she was refusing food or broth. I thought since there was blood & heavy matting around the left mouth/jaw, she might have an abscess; or perhaps she was just so anemic she was bleeding from her gums. I also noted pretty rattly lung sounds bilaterally when I listed to them. She had had some coughing with exertion, but nothing wracking.
I took her to Emergency Pet Clinic here. The vet explained to me that since her lungs were sounding bad, he felt it was important to get chest x-rays.
When he went over the films w/me, there was little lung space that wasn’t white from infiltrates. Also, the bronchial tubes were so inflamed that they were showing clearly on the x-rays.
The vet felt that since we aren’t sure what the cause her her respiratory infection is, Chantilly needs to be in isolation. He also wanted to do a CBC to determine what her WBC levels are, & look for any shifts in ‘cytes & ‘phils. He also felt is was important to check out her electrolyte levels with an EC8 profile, to be sure they hydrate her with the correct IV fluids.
For now, the treatment plan for Chantilly is:
·         isolation
·         labwork mentioned above
·         oxygen therapy
·         pulse oximetry monitoring
·         IV antibiotics to include doxycycline & Baytril
·         IV hydration
·         nebulizer treatments
·         Brethine subq injections
If her O2 saturations drop with regular O2 therapy, they will need to insert the nasal cannula deeply, which would require sedation & stitches to hold the cannula in place.
NTEPC is now open 24/7/365, instead of just having hours opposite of the regular vet offices.
The estimate for 24 hours of care for Chantilly at NTEPC is $1764.42 - $1814.42.
WE NEED THIS AMOUNT TO GET HER OUT OF THIS CRITICAL CARE FACILITY TOMORROW!!  HELP!!!  Ok, we’re having an anxiety attack here.  We really wanted to save this little girl.  HELP!!
AS OF 7 AM, SHE HAS $315, THANKS Marty Howard, Debbie Knoepfel, Sherry Goodpasture, Melissa Lombard, Cat Martindale, Tiffany Farr, Gay and Bruce Yancy, Doug Cameron and Lesley Warrin!!

Bless her little heart, even though she was feeling so badly, she made a point to get up & walk to the back door every time she had to go out to pee.
Patricia ”
