Making Progress – the Katy 34 shih tzu are absolutely adorable!!

Posted in Katy 34 Jan 2009 at 7:14 am by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

Dakari Katy.JPG

Well, these babies are absolutely adorable and getting extremely friendly.  Most do not know how to walk on a leash, but are learning very quickly.  Once we got the mats cut off of them, they felt so much better.  Above is little Dakari.

This little sweetie is Irisi.  She was initially very shy, but now is a love bug!

Hasini Katy.JPG

This is the MOST adorable Hasani, nicknamed “Sonny.”  When we found him, he had a bandage or belly band wrapped around his middle and there were open oozing sores and urine scalding all over his belly.

And, here for your viewing pleasure is a puppy fix for the day!  These little ones are only four weeks old right now.

Special thanks to Jamie and Cate, two youngsters who, with their grandmother’s help, are helping us with all of the meds for Omari’s punctured eye, all of the cyclosporine for the little fluffies with dry eye, antibiotics for Hasani’s burned and infected tummy, and the meds we need to get rid of 34 cases of tape worms.

The fundraising is going well – as of right now, we have just over $1800 in their fund, thanks to the following….

Fluff of the Week – Rajah – gorgeous lhasa apso boy!

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:56 am by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

Rajah Transport Dec 2008 230.JPGMy name is Rajah and I am a very handsome 4 year old Lhasa Apso lad.  I have a beautiful tri-colored coat and I’m about 18 pounds or so.

I have a great PUPonality and I am quite the easy-going guy. I really am just about the perfect dog!  I do like my food however, and sometimes I want to make sure my foster brothers and sisters don’t eat my food!  Other than that, I get along very well with other dogs.  And, as you can see, I LOVE my little green toy and will carry it with me.  I am in a foster home in Arizona and I sure do like the weather here!

I came to Lone Star after my family had to give me up because of the economy.  We lost our home and I lost my family.  I was very sad, and miss them very much, especially my 7 year old human companion.  She and I were together all the time.  So, if my new forever family had older children to play with me and love me, that would be great!  I promise I will make you happy if you bring me into your family.

If you would like to learn more about me, please look at my Petfinder page.  Also, please contact Emily at arizonatzu@yahoo.com for even more information.  I need to find my forever home.  Do you think that might be with you?

I am altered, up-to-date on all my shots and heartworm negative.

OH MY GOODNESS! 34, yes 34, little shih tzu need us NOW!!

Posted in Katy 34 Jan 2009 at 4:51 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

DSC_0031.JPG

Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse – first the economy in Texas is HORRIBLE – people are leaving the city and abandoning their little dogs in the back yards.  Then the holidays hit and there are TONS of little dogs left at the local shelters – we are already overflowing with dogs.  And, with the economy so bad, adoptions are WAY DOWN.  And, with the not-so-rosey outlook for the near future economy, donations are WAY down.  And, we have SIX little broken or ill dogs that we need to raise funds for (Gingerbread’s myleogram and wheel cart, Grainger’s stay in ICU for pneumonia, Alamo’s surgery to remove the pin fron his leg, Tapioca’s heartworm treatment and Monkey and Pate’s rehabilitation exercises twice a week in the water treatmill.

Then along comes 34 little shih tzu that desperately need somewhere to go.

Can you believe?!?!?!?

I received an email early this morning from a very nice lady who informed me that a lady of her church had had a heart attack and was in the hospital.  This lady was a breeder of shih tzu and had 34, yes 34, shih tzu living alone at her home.  The friend sounded totally desperate – and kept saying that they needed to do something asap for these little dogs.

So, I drove out to the little town outside of Houston where this former breeder lived and evaluated all of the 34 dogs.  Here are just a few pictures….

Male 2.JPG

Male 5-b.JPG

So, here’s the dilemma – we MUST raise the funds for our existing dogs AND the funds to vet as many of these little dogs as possible.

The prior owner is hospitalized and there is NO ONE to care for these dogs now.  The home is vacant.  The dogs are living in the back yard under a shed and we MUST get them out.

But we absolutely MUST raise the funds for the other little broken dogs asap too.

We estimate that it will cost around $400 per dog to vet them IF THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS.  We looked all through the lady’s house today and did not find any type of heartworm preventative.  We are just so hoping that these dogs do not have heartworms.

So, PLEASE, PLEASE help us help these little babies.

We not only need funds, we desperately need foster homes for them as well.  Because of the proximity, our preference for foster homes is in Texas, Louisiana and Arizona where we already have an extensive network.  Please think about it.  Also, understand that we MUST have all new fosters go through the same approval process as all of the current fosters.  Email me at Teresa@shihtzu-rescue.com if you think you might be able to foster one or more of these little puppers.

I know times are tough now, but these little guys NEED YOU!!  If you can help with their funding, please CLICK HERE to contribute via paypal or HERE to tell me you’re sending a check.

If you can help the others, read about GINGERBREAD WORTH HERE, or the little TAPICOA DAVIS HERE, or PATE DAVIS HERE, or ALAMO BEXAR HERE or or the very lucky miracle boy MONKEY HARRIS HERE, or the unbelievably cute GRAINGER TURNER HERE.

Thanks  so much!!

Mr Grainger Turner was a very, very sick little boy

Deogi 12-09-2008-B-032.JPG

This adorable little old guy came to us when his dad had to go into an assisted living facility and no family members or friends wanted to take Grainger in.  We adore Grainger.  He has to be one of the sweetest, most loving little guys ever!

But, just a few weeks after coming in, he came down with a massive case of pneumonia.  In fact, the vet thought we were going to lose him, but thankfully we didn’t.  He stayed hospitalized for several days on IVs and several different antibiotics and thankfully he survived.

But, his bill for hospitalization was just over $760.  And, yes, we now need to pay it.  HELP!

Gingerbread Worth – very broken little girl

Posted in Gingerbread Worth at 11:40 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

The message came like they all do “URGENT, paralyzed lhasa girl needs out NOW.”

Gingerbread at shelter - lhasa paralyzed nov.jpg

The little beauty had been sitting in a DFW area shelter for over two weeks and no one else offered to take her in.  Then the shelter volunteer sent me the picture and it was over.

We arranged to bring her to Houston and have her evaluated at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists to see if they could work the same magic they worked on Monkey and Pate.

It was a RUSH and we had to do it before I could get the story written and see if this was what we wanted to do.

Well, unfortunately, her back could not be fixed.  IN fact, the little girl had already had a back surgery sometime in the past that was not successful.  She will never walk.  But, thanks to Nancy Doyle at the rehab center at Gulf Coast, we now have a little wheel cart for her and she is learning how to wheel around the Deogi Daycare center now!!

Deogi 12-23-2008-041.JPG

Of course, we incurred a lot of expense running the tests – we had to do the myleogram and CT scan.  The total, with our substantial discount was just under $2500.  Plus her little cart was $340.

We certainly do want to continue to be able to help the little fluffers that have no other options, but can only do it with your help.

Please help us pay off little Gingerbread’s bills so we can move forward.

Pate Davis – bladderstone-free

Posted in Pate Davis at 11:07 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

 Pate Davis Deogi 9-5-2008-003.jpg

Remember Pate?  He’s the little older but absolutely charming and gorgeous shih tzu boy who had a very bad chronic back problem.  The very generous donations from our unbelievably generous supporters allowed us to fix his back and start him in rehab.

But, the bladderstones were still a problem that needed to be addressed.

So, we took him into surgery and had those stones removed, along with a mess of very disgustingly rotted teeth.

This dog is so wonderful and so very loving and now he really is on the mend.

His bill for the bladderstone sugery was only $465.  Dr. Moore took pity on us and cut us a HUGE break.

Tapioca Davis – an IKE orphan – need help with heartworm treatment

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:59 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

While we sat here in Houston, in the dark and un-airconditioned result of Hurricane Ike, dogs continued to PLEAD for rescue.  Even though we were practically without any services at all – internet was restricted to a very slow dial up and my blackberry – and phone was restricted to an old non-electrical decorator phone that used to sit in my guest room – dogs still had to be saved from almost certain death.

Tapioca Davis was one little fluffer that got lucky when Ike hit her home.  Evidently, she was left behind because the SPCA found her running the streets in one of the completely flooded neighborhoods.

Tapioca Davis Deogi 9-29-2008-080.jpg

When we first got Tapi, we thought she was ancient.  She had very little hair, horrible skin and was very lethargic.  And her eyes were dull, dry and crusty.  We tested her for heartworms, and found that she has a very, very heavy load of heartworms.  We decided at that time, to start her on doxycycline and heartgard for a few months, first to give us time to build up her body and secondly to try to weaken the heartworms.

Tapi started heartworm treatment on 12/1 and so far is doing well.  Her treatment is the really, really slow treatment, so will need to continue for a few months.

We desperately need help with her bills.  With as much down time as we’ve had, and as many very, very, very expensive little dogs, AND with the economy in such bad shape, we are stretched very, very thin right.

Please help little Tapioca, one of the lucky Ike survivors.
