I just have no idea what is going on. I’m up to my eyeballs with Cherie-Borg-Barbie and Ginger (personal dogs), plus trying to get out of town for a wedding (my adorable oldest niece is getting married – what!!! She can’t be more than 6-7 years old! Oh wait, she’s 23 – where did all the time go???), and just begged and begged for the three Arkana dogs plus little Demetrius and then I get this horrible message last night…..
“Jackie, near Longview, TX just took possession of about 50 dogs from a puppy mill. The sheriff had been out and told the breeder she had to get rid of them by Friday. Breeder said whatever was not picked up by midnight would disappear. The sheriff had been out and told the breeder she had to get rid of them by Friday.
Breeds she named were Chihuahuas(some 2 day old puppies), over 20 Chinese cresteds, Bichons, Shi Tzus, poodles, 7 Pomeranians, 3 cockers (2 pups, one adult) 2 adult rottweilers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, a blue heeler, 1 corgie with a lot of fear but young, Lhasa Apsos, 6 week old pomeranian with no hair (bad mange).
Those are the ones she could remember. She said they were so matted that she could not identify some breeds.”
I called Jackie and yes, indeed, she has dogs sitting everywhere. She and her friends were going back and forth to the breeder’s location last night when I called. She truly believed that whatever was there after midnight would “disappear.” She said they are all in horrible condition – most very very thin, all matted and nasty.
Small Paws Rescue, a fabulous Bichon Rescue is coming for the ten bichons, crested rescue is picking up most of the cresteds. There are three mops that are either shih tzu or lhasas (Jackie doesn’t know the difference) so we need to come to her aid and get these dogs.
I just about threw up when I got this message. We are just bursting at the seams but how can we turn down these needy dogs.
I know you all really want to commit me now to the nearest insane asylum and so does my husband, but what can we do? I’ve said before, we really take this advocate position for these dogs to heart. We can not try, so here we are, asking again.
Right now, we’re going to commit if we can get the funds for normal vetting. If they have heartworms or something else, we’ll try to raise those funds when we get that information.
We’re right now calling these three the Longview Puppymill Trio – I don’t know if they are males or females, ages, or anything else about them. We need to be able to pick them up no later than Sunday and have someone standing by for the drive if we can raise the funds.
If you think you can help, please donate HERE via paypal or go HERE to send a check(Longview Puppymill Trio)!
We can now take credit cards – American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover. I’ve uploaded the credit card authorization form. If you want to use a credit card, please click HERE to down load the form. You can then fax it to 281-754-4851. And email me (Teresa@shihtzu-rescue.com) so I know to look for the fax.
If you want to use a credit card, and have already used it before, just email me (teresa@shihtzu-rescue.com) the amount you would like to send to help one or more of these babies.
And thank you for allowing us to rescue the most needy of the needy – again and again – over and over. You must be the most generous people on the face of the earth!!

Thanks to all your wonderful donations, we were able to rescue the “Arkana Girls” and get them inside with air conditioning, clean water, and regular food. Our volunteer transported them to DFW and will care for them until other foster homes are located. Once they get settled in, they will understand they will be loved and pampered for evermore.
More good news - in a quick heartworm test, they appear to be negative for those deadly and pesty parasites. Barring any other problems they may have contracted in their past environment and care, these girls should be ready for adoption in a month or so.
Thank you for helping us meet this financial challenge. Most of all, Cara, Chantell and Fergie thank you.

Chantilly has blossomed into a beautiful personality (and dog). Each day I am amazed that this is the same dog that I brought to the ED about a week and a half ago. Chantilly is a prime example of why people fail fostering 101.
That sick little bag of bones with the big bobble head hairdo is filling out nicely. She has quite the appetite, & knows how to work it for a treat.
Her darker markings are more slate than black on her head, & along her back there is a lot of taupe mixed in. So, when her fur gets to the short fluffy stage, she will be utterly gorgeous.
Personality? She oozes it. And it’s good personality, too. I equate it to gentile southern belle personality: miss manners, friendly, respectful of her housemates, & offers unsolicited affection if allowed. She ”plays well with others”, which translates into: she is polite to my furbies, & has so far made no attempts to dominate anyone. She loooooves to be petted & massaged. She allows me to clean her face without any squirming on her part.
Chantilly is a dancer. She likes to spin & dance when she is happy. She employs this when she is wanting a treat, too. She does not jump up, though; another example of excellent manners.
She comes when called. I have been calling her Tilly, & she responds very well to that. OK, so, I also call her Tillamook (as in Oregon), thus she is also called Tillamookie my Cookie. She responds well to that, too.
She has proven herself so far to be house broken. I have tried the whole “we go out for elimination rounds 30 mins after eating” thing, but she doesn’t play that game. She goes out with me, then promptly sits then will sprawl out on the grass in a classic lounge pose. Then, after we go back inside, she heads back out thru the pet door & does her thing. Silly little Tilly. She has yet to soil the house.
Tilly still has a bit of a dry cough, but her lungs sound good. She is still on her antibiotics, which she is taking well, especially the Baytril which I put in a little raw meatball for her. She has also learned that if she takes her Cleocin drops w/o a struggle, she gets a raw meatball chaser, too.
And, Tilly apparently believes that it is her responsibility to protect me. She & my little affenpinscher, Teddy, have become bark buddies. Teddy is deaf, so he depends on signals from others to know when to bark. Tilly goes outside on backyard patrol with Teddy, & tells him when to bark. Then, they go at it, keeping the property safe.
Tilly also likes the soft life, aka The Big Chair. When I’m not looking, & treats have already been dispensed, then next thing I know she is curled up in The Big Chair (down cushions). She readily hops down when I shoo her off, & she acquiesces to relaxing on the big fluffy floor pillow. I am happy to allow this little lover to be on my furniture, but while fostering, I try to instill furniture manners in case that is important to an adopter. I crate her at night for this reason as well, but Tilly is definitely going to be a snuggler in bed if her forever family allows it.
Since I believe things happen for a reason, there must be someone fabulous out there that desperately needs this little dog in their life. Whomever Tilly lived with prior has suffered a major loss even if they aren’t aware of it. Tilly knows about love & trust, & is very good at giving & accepting both. Her forever family is going to be so in love with this dog.
Jazzy? Jazzy is still not impressed, LOL.

When it rains, it pours. We need more dogs like we need a hole in the head. So why, oh why, do they come searching us out…

Ok, young puppy, sort of a lhasa, has MANGE – who else would take him? We had to go get him. I thought that if we were going to take him, we needed to get him immediately. Sherry picked him up today.

Of course, we now need to take him to the vet.
Update: Monday morning 11 am. Thanks to all of you, funding is pouring in for this sweet little fluff. We’re almost there for him…thanks to Susan Gregory and Kristie Armstrong!!

I’m sure you all know that my Cherie is one of the original Lone Star rescues. She certainly did have a horrible first six years of life and frankly, had she stayed in that puppymill two more months, she would have died, probably either in a four dog “breeding pen” or tied to the porch with a piece of baling twine.
This is what she looked like in January 2001 when we got her out of the puppymill.

Here she is after a few months.
Well, she was one of the lucky ones. Lone Star saved her – she had to have a blood transfusion in 2001 just to keep her alive. She fought the ehrlichia then and won. My husband and I adopted her in June of 2001. Here is Cherie after about a year.
She fought ehrlichia again at least once a year and has so far beat that nasty little bug down so that she remained healthy. Her most recent battle with her back is taxing her strength, but so far she’s still going! As you know, she had surgery for two herniated discs on Thursday, August, 16. She came home for the weekend and declined significantly. She went in for fluids on Sunday (thank you Dr. Moore of Stafford Oaks Veterinary Hospital), and back to Gulf Coast for ICU on Monday. On Tuesday night, the neurologist called to say that Cherie had a luxation in one of the surgery sites and her spinal cord was severely compromised – as in she could not walk. She had another surgery on Wednesday – it was over four hours. They put nine pins in her vertebrae – one to fix the fractured vertebrae that caused the luxation and eight to attach to an external stabilizer to hold her spine in the correct position until it heals.
Here is a picture I took on Friday after her last surgery.
She is now home again and so far so good. She looks like a Borg-Barbie – she has this set of steel pins sticking out of her back and it’s topped off with a bright pink wad of gauze and vet wrap. She’s very thin, but eating well and walking extremely well considering she had her back completely opened up twice in a week. Thank you everyone for all of the wonderful, caring emails. I cried often – sometimes from fear and terror about Cherie and sometimes because of the kindness and compassion you all showed. I’m hopeful that this surgery worked and NO MORE time in ICU for Cherie.

You are going to think we are absolutely nuts. We are so innundated with dog right now, and here we are looking at taking in three more.
As I’ve said before, we have to advocate for those that have little other choice – and particularly those in dire straits.
Here is the story of Cara, Chantell and Fergie Arkana.
A family in east Texas fell on hard times when their home burned. They moved in with others, but left behind three absolutely charming female Shih Tzus. Neither have been spayed and they all need vaccinations at a minimum. They are living outdoors in this extremely hot Texas sun. By being exposed to the elements, including mosquitos, we are praying they have been able to avoid heartworms. This is their current environment:

These girls are YOUNG – ages 5, 3, and 2. If we are able to secure donations for these girls, we wil get them. We can get them inside and provide medical care. We can then work on our next hurdle to find a home to foster them to prepare them for adoption. This will be a traumatic event in their little lives, so the earlier we can show them love and a life we will assure them from now on – the better.
Cara Arkana, 5 year old female, full Shih Tzu

Mama Cara is white with tan and a gorgeous crystal blue eye. She is reported to house trained.
Chantell Arkana, 3 year old female, half Shih Tzu (Cara is her mommy)

Chantell is mostly white and can be good in the house, just doesn’t let you know if she needs out. She is very timid and working through trust issues after surviving a pit bull attack at an early age.
Fergie Arkana, 2 year old female, half Shih Tzu (Cara is her mommy too)

Fergie is personable, but has never been kept inside.
The owner also indicates all the girls are intimidated by children since they have tormented the girls through the fence in the past.
They will only be able to stay at the house for another week, but we need to save them sooner. They are outside in the worst heat this summer. Please help us rescue them now with donations or foster homes. Because we have had such overwhelming vet bills lately, including the Chantilly Worth and Braysia ER bills, we have to have the funds committed before we commit to take these girls. We are certain they will be adoptable quickly. We estimate a minimum of $500 per dog to take care of all their needs barring any serious conditions we are not aware.
Update, Wednesday morning – 11:00 am - We are really close, looks like we’re going to be able to get these babies! Thanks to Bruce and Gay Yancey, Stephanie Jones, Judy Florence, Wyatt Edenfield, Susan Gregory, Cathy Hite, Deborah Knoepfel, Christine Connolly, Lorna Van De Weile, Susan Burstad, Arthur Schoefer, Jean Flanagan.

Chantilly is definitely feeling much better. Here is a note from her foster mom!
Notice the difference in today’s photos & the photos taken 1 week ago. (Read her whole story HERE).
She is a little lover. She also wants what she wants, and wants it when she wants it. She is not pushy, though… she just exhibits that patience that royalty shows when dealing with ignorant commoners – royalty always has manners, even when dealing with the little people.
I showed her the pet door twice: once to go out, & once to return inside. She has that down solid, & uses it well. In line with the “on her own terms” aspect, she so far prefers not to pee/poo when we go out for that specific task… instead, she will go right back out by herself & do her thing (while I supervise from the back door).

Her appetite is excellent, & she loves treats. When she fills out she will likely be close to 20 lbs. She is very spry & likes to dance around. Definitely life has returned to her eyes.
She’s still doing a little bit of a cough, but no discharge from the nose. The big ulcer on her lower left lip is scabbing over & healing well. Taking her meds with only minimal fuss, knowing that she will be getting a treat chaser.
She is patient with allowing her face to be cleaned, even around the eyes.
Thanks to all of you for allowing us to save this little girl’s life!!

Kula was deemed a special needs dog because he came to us with rear leg that didn’t work correctly. He was the victim of neglect and after being hit by a car, his prior family deprived him of medical treatment and his ankle and other broken bones healed “as is.” You remember HIS STORY RIGHT??
You better believe that none of this ever stopped Kula and he finally found a family who loved him for his disability. Kula also has a new brother, Guinness.

Here is his foster mom’s recap:
”
Kula Parks thought he was never going to get himself a forever mommy and daddy because he is physically challenged (hit by a car which resulted in two broken hips) and is probably looking at surgery in the future to fuse his ankle in place. I am proud to say that Kula now has himself a family which is very important to a Lhasa as they are all about companionship. His forever family includes mom Joy, dad Mark, and little brother Guinness. (Kula is the white dog in the family photo.) His mom and dad are very good about Kula’s physical therapy which involves walking daily. These walks are one of the highlights of Kula’s day. He has gotten to know his little brother well enough that they now walk side by side as if it were always meant to be. Kula is a very lucky boy to have found such an unconditionally loving family. I know he will thrive in his new environment. Foster Mom Ja.”

How about a couple of happy tails today. Sally Turner came to us a few months ago, when a vet called to say that a perfectly healthy gorgeous lhasa girl had just been dropped off at his clinic TO BE PUT TO SLEEP!! No real reason given except that the family was tired of her. So we picked her up.
Lucky girl was adopted yesterday and it looks like it was a great match!!

From Aunt B’s Foster Mom
Saturday Afternoon: Aunt B went to the vet this morning, and while she’s a sick little girl, it’s not as bad as we had imagined. She was diagnosed with coccidia, which is an intestinal parasite as well as an intestinal bacterial infection. It’s something she’s picked up from the soil as she loves to go out and sniff and lick everything in the yard. From now one, she’ll be taking short trips outside and be watched more carefully. The vet felt she wasn’t dehydrated enough to be concerned at this point and sent her home with several medications. She should start to feel better in about 48 hours. Her foster mom will try to get some chicken broth down her if she won’t eat and mix it with a little pumpkin because her intestines are inflamed and she’s had diarrhea. This problem could lead to serious consequences, but we caught it in time and the vet feel she’ll be just fine. Thanks to everyone for helping us take care of her. As of Tuesday night, we’ve raised $135 for her bills. THANKS WYATT EDENFIELD, CAT MARTINDALE and MARTY HOWARD!
Although no longer an ICU condition, we still need to raise the funds for this vet visit as well as her annual exam which is soon coming up. Please donate HERE via paypal or go HERE to send a check(specify Aunt B)!

Saturday Morning: It’s unbelievable, but we’re faced with another immediate medical challenge. Aunt B, has declined almost overnight and is not taking fluids. Fortunately, her foster mom was able to detect it early this morning in time to get her into one of our vets rather than it waiting until we had to take her to an emergency clinic. Sweet Aunt B has not been eating as well as normal, but her foster mom didn’t think too much of it until she noticed she didn’t eat at all on Friday and then began declining liquids, and as of early Saturday was not urinating or drinking and had become extremely lethargic. We don’t know what is wrong, but we need to get her in for some tests and fluids quickly We estimate the cost to be around $225 at this point unless they detect something more serious needing attention. We’re ordering a chem 6 blood panel to check for liver and kidney values, a CBC to check for anemia and some subQ fluids to help her over this hump. We know how much everyone has been willing to help recently with our dogs in the hospital, but we need just a bit more to help this little girl out. We are hopeful it’s something minor and she’ll be back to normal very soon.
