Ah, my internet is back up. Darn, how helpless we are without communication tools. Seems someone in a backhoe cut a huge fibre cable in Austin and most of the Comcast network was down for several hours this afternoon. Ok, update on Le’Poodley. The surgeon called to say that she came out of anesthesia well and has feeling in both back legs. It’s way too early to know if she will walk, but this is a good report for now. Becky(another foster mom) stopped by and took pictures and got tons of Le’Poodley kisses. Enough for all of you.
We didn’t quite get all the donations needed to get her out of debt on Monday, when she needs to go home, but we went ahead anyway. Call me a BIG SUCKER for these dogs. Oh well, as I’ve said several times this week, “just shoot me now!!” Please don’t wait until the bills come in! LOL
Ok, check here tomorrow morning for new pics of Ms. Le’Poodley and her new fixed back. Fingers, toes and paws crossed that she will regain use of those cute little legs.
If you have any extra pennies sitting around and can help us raise the remaining $600 for Le’Poodley before Monday, please go HERE .
Thanks and Poodley kisses to Annie Galloway, Traci Tran, Tracy Rao, Laura Ritchie, Rebecca Morgan, Lee Edenfield, in memory of Oreo Thomas, Julie and Pat Minnucci, in memory of Simon Minnucci, Doug Cameron, Gay Yancey from Colby, Sweetie and Seth Worth, Cat Martindale in honor of Chachacha, Chugger and Chiclet, Lorna Van De Weile, Mike and Joyce Tate in memory of Abbi Tate Worth, Anon1, Anon2, Deborah Knoepfel, Kristie Brown, Amy Sandhagen, Rosemary Cody in honor of Tami and Brigitte, Deborah Knoepfel, Sally and Doug Cameron, Leslie Warrin, Christine Hutchinson from Woody who had the same surgery and “waddles” around wonderfully, Anna Dee Lastik, Byron Leger, Pam Glass in honor of Chippy, Marty Howard in memory of Fritz Worth Howard, Amanda Moulton, Melissa Lombard, Darlene Keisler in memory of Pongo!

Last week, we begged for foster homes to help us save a few little tzu and lhasas. Many people came through for these babies and we have several new foster homes.
Here is an update on the pitiful ones that are waiting for us were saved at the Harris County shelter. The updates are in ALL CAPS

THIS ONE WAS ACTUALLY ADOPTED BY AN INDIVIDUAL AND WILL BE TREATED FOR HER HEARTWORMS!!
This is a little female with heartworms. There is someone with an adoption hold who is looking for an inexpensive place to get her heartworm treatment.

WE HAVE THIS BADLY MATTED BOY – HIS NAME IS BRAXTON HARRIS.
This is a young male with skin problems and hair loss.

WE HAVE THIS LITTLE HEARTWORM POSITIVE BOY – HIS NAME IS ORSON HARRIS.
This little cutie also has the heartworm death sentence. No one has a hold on him.

THIS IS A TINY LITTLE PUPPY – NOT EVEN 6 POUNDS – AND SHE IS SADLY VERY, VERY, VERY SICK – IT MAY BE DISTEMPER. WE’VE ALREADY ORDERED OUR DISTEMPER DOCTOR’S MIRACLE SUPPLEMENTS FROM DALLAS AND HOPE TO HAVE IT TOMORROW. HER NAME IS JUNE BUG HARRIS.

We were also able to pick up one from a south Houston shelter. He was supposed to be six years old with a punctured eye, but he’s really two years old with two good eyes. Is this not a cutie??
His name is Mooney Burke.

What a great day today is! First the great news about Juicy Lu and now this. I just got off the phone with the Surgical Center in Dallas who gave me GREAT NEWS!!
Remember, our regular vet thought surgery was not an option, but ever-the-optimist, I asked our vet to refer us to a surgeon at DVS. I cannot tell you how important it is to get a SPECIALIST on the case when something like this happens.
Once the surgeon heard about Poodley, we were ORDERED over to DVS immediately. The surgeon said he wanted to see her immediately because he thought that if she still has pain, there is a chance for her to walk again!! So Lynda left work and picked Le’Poodley up from the regular vet and went immediately to the surgery center. The surgeon got her in within minutes and examined Poodley. Poodley does have a compressed disc – when this happens, some sort of injury, and it doesn’t have to be major trauma, causes the vertebra to “squash” the disc material out. It hardens and encroaches on the spinal cord causing paralysis. Guess what?!?!
The surgeon gives her a 70% chance to walk again. YIPEE! The surgery involves removing the disc material that is causing pressure on the spinal cord.
I was so excited with this second round of great news —- until I remembered, darn, we have just about tapped out all sources of fundraising after the Mills Kids, Galveston Trio, Chimi’s emergency room, Charro Worth’s pneumonia. Then I got depressed. I don’t know what to do now! Do we just go with her paralyzed and look for a kind soul to help manage her paralysis or…..what?
So what do you all think??? Her surgery will cost $2300-$2500 plus a few hundred for followup visits. On the other hand, a K9-cart, a little wheel chair for doggies, costs around $150-$200 for a rescue of this size.
So, if you all are up for it, we’ll try the surgery. We have a foster home, the same one that nursed McGuire Harley Hurst (Happy Tail HERE) and Zion Burleson back to health. And, honestly, if we can’t do it, that’s ok. You all have done so much for these little dogs in the past and Le’Poodley is alive and she at least has that. She should have a great full life – she’s only about 3-4 years old.
If you do have any pennies to spare, the PAYPAL LINK IS HERE. Or, if you just want to do it by check, go HERE. Be sure to put “Le’Poodley Worth” on the pledge form. If not, please don’t stress about it. You SAVED HER LIFE anyway. And she will have a good life regardless of whether she is in a wheel chair or running on four good legs!! HERE is the little movie Lynda made that shows how she scoots around.
As usual, status will be maintained on this page.
FUNDRAISING STATUS: $1485 As of 11 AM Friday, June 29, 2007

I am just so excited I can’t sit still. Do you remember Juicy Lu? Of course you do – she was featured in a ton of our emails last month.
Well, I just got off the phone with my vet who told me that Juicy Lu’s post-surgery ACTH Stim test is NORMAL. That’s right, she does not have CUSHINGS Disease!! I just can’t believe the great fortune this little dog has!
What a lucky little girl. Ok, adopters, the line starts HERE. Haha. This little girl is so sweet, great in the house, and about as loving a shih tzu as I’ve seen.
Now, she will need to be monitored for the rest of her life, for excessive water intake, etc. – the symptoms of Cushings – and we will REQUIRE that whoever adopts her spends some significant time on the phone or in person with Dr. Jones at Gulf Coast to understand how to monitor and later manage Cushings Disease.

Lone Star has been saving abandoned, neglected and abused dogs since 1999. We are always inundated with more dogs than anyone can imagine and I know that most people have absolutely no idea that what should be a cherished, beloved little lap dog ends up neglected in someones back yard and then in a shelter awaiting euthanasia.
There are so many dogs, that we typically only take in the ones that are “last call” which means that all other avenues, the public, other rescue groups, etc., have been exhausted and the dog is then on death row. Those are the ones we get. And this little story is a good example of why….
Harpo Oaks was a “last call” dog at a DFW shelter – he was one whose time was up on the WORST single day to date this year – the day before the Memorial Day holiday. Dogs were being left at the DFW shelters by the hundreds. This was the day that one small shelter said they had 100 dogs dropped off in a four hour span.
Harpo was one of the dogs that had to either be picked up immediately, or…..
Here is what he looked like when we picked him up…

Obviously, this boy hadn’t seen a lot of love in his recent past. We picked him up, got him vetted and cleaned up. (Thanks to your wonderful, generous donations for the “May 2007 Floodgate” and “Memorial Day Flash Flood” dogs.
Fast forward to this past weekend…
Mr. Harpo went home with his new FOREVER family. Can you see the joy on the faces of these people??? DO you think he will ever look like that pitiful, neglected little tzu again?? NOPE! THIS IS WHAT YOU DO FOR THESE DOGS!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO HARPO AND TO HIS FAMILY!

In mid June, we picked up a “pack” of discarded breeder dogs from a breeder in North Texas. They had exhausted their income-producing capabilities and the breeder just wanted them gone immediately – there are SIX of them – and we were given that day to come get them. We scrambled around – didn’t even have the time to raise the funds to vet them FIRST, which we would prefer to do so that we all don’t have an anxiety attack.
Regardless, we knew the supporters of Lone Star would want these puppsters saved so we picked them up.
Here is what Flash looked like when we picked him up from the breeder that discarded him in North Texas…
We cleaned him up, got him vetted and groomed and into a great foster home. Here is what that little neglected throw-away looks like now and the write up from his foster mom…
This boy is the tiniest, most adorable little guy. He is incredibly adorable and extremely loving. The first few days, he was very timid and wary of his new environment but he is quickly adapting and his timidity is rapidly disappearing. He is a quick little escape artist and is so tiny that you really have to be careful going out the door. He absolutely loves toys and pulls every one he can reach out of the toy basket. But he does go from toy to toy to toy so they do get a work out. He plays tug-of-war very well but has not caught on to fetch. He is an active little guy but will also snuggle, snuggle, snuggle. His favorite spot is sitting next to you with his chin resting on your leg. So far, he has gotten along with every one of my other dogs, is curious about the cats and is learning how to comfortably meet people…still a little gun-shy at first. Other than his initial timidity and pretty much total lack of potty manners….you would never know he was a puppy mill survivor. Thank goodness. Flash is around six, recovering from anemia and periodontal disease and is heartworm positive. Once he regains his strength, he will begin heartworm treatment and then hopefully, no -make that definitely- find the fabulous future he deserves.

He looks just a bit happier, doesn’t he?? He should be ready to be adopted in August so apply now for this adorable, cutest-of-the-cute shih tzu boys.

These sweeties have had their repsective eye surgeries. Thanks to all of the absolutely wonderful people that donated to get them where they need to be.
Let me just say that I’ve fostered a ton of dogs since Lone Star started in 1999, but these three (Hiram included) are hands down, the best, sweetest, most loving little neglected babies I’ve ever fostered. If I didn’t have seven uppity fluffs already, all three would stay here.
So, if anyone is looking for PERFECT temperament lhasas, please ADOPT these babies. They need a great home.
We removed Myrtle’s very glaucoma-diseased eye – she should be feeling much better when this heals. And Claude had his “rip” repaired and we started the “eye lift” to resolve his entropian eyelids.
Love these dogs!

Say hello to one lucky puppy….Ms. Le’Poodley Worth
Lynda, our foster coordinator in the DFW area, picked up Poodley at around 8 am this morning. Poodley is not a BLACK poodley girl, she is a beautiful, rich chocolate brown. She dropped her off at the vet and we just received the report on Poodley’s x-ray, here is the info
Subject: Le Poodley’s x-ray
Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 12:34:48 -0500
From: “Lynda”
To: “Teresa Osborn”
Shows narrowing of the disc space. She has decreased pain response and [the vet] does not think there will be surgical options. An MRI may tell more. He can refer us to the Surgery center for additional opinions and options for her to be able to function. We probably need to locate a doggie cart for her and extend an additional plea for a foster/adoptive home for her. Lynda
Our regular vet thinks her injury is way too old to do anything about, but we are going to visit the neurosurgeon that worked on Harley McGuire Hurst to see what his thoughts are. We do have a tiny bit of funding for her already, thanks Anon 1 and Anon 2, enough to cover the office visit.
But we’re going to put out feelers today – if she is not repairable, please let me know if you are interested in adopting. Here is a little movie Lynda made showing how she scoots around. She is continent – can potty ok on her own.

We’re still trying really darn hard to be able to get this little gal. Donations keep trickling in and we’re hopeful that by tomorrow morning, we can give the go-ahead to pick her up! Please check the blog entries for the GALVESTON LHASA TRIO and the SHIH TZU MILLS KIDS to donate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Geez, when will it stop. Just as I’m trying to get a handle on our funds for the Galveston Trio and the Mills Kids, this comes in…
Avail Poodle/Lhasa, Female, Down in back
Some paralyzing thing is going on with this ones back end. I don’t know to what extent. She has recently had a groom job.
She looks like a tiny little thing and is described as sweet as can be. We don’t know what her medical problems are, hopefully something that just needs rest, but ….
We just can’t authorize her into the program until we know we can do right by her. So we absolutely have to have the funds to help the Galveston Trio and Mills Kids in place before we can even get her out of the shelter.
We really, really do take our “job” as advocate for these helpless ones seriously, but also desperately need your help.
If you can help with a tiny donation for Claude, Myrtle and Hiram (Galveston Trio) or Britt, Laser, Kendra, Dune, Flash and Troy (Mills Kids), please help. Summer is totally horrible, since most families take vacation and need their discretionary funds for that AND our foster homes also like to take a small vacation so we have to board ($$) many dogs during the summer AND everyone and their brother is dumping their dogs at the shelters before THEY go on vacation so they don’t have to pay boarding. Hey, can we just ELIMINATE vacations?
Once we get the Galveston Trio and Mills Kids funds whole, we will get this gal and start working for her!! Sometimes, this is a full time job!
Look at this sweet lhasa face – look how unbelievably happy this girl looks. I’m moving this story up to the top of the blog. To date, this trio has only raised $975 of the approx $1450 they need to be “repaired.” This includes THREE SLOW KILL heartworm treatments, an eye enucleation and the repair to Claude’s torn eye lid. Please take pity on these three, read the story from the shelter person who took them in and how they looked after we got them. Think of how horribly they were treated in the past. I want to get these babies whole and get them on the way to a new, happy, cherished forever home!!!
Thanks to Laura Radler, in memory of Cooper, Sassy Kathy, Jim Rosen, Natty Products, Debbie Styron, Wow Me Now, LLC, Pam Glass, Kathy Kurbis, mom to one of our other “broken” kids, Gracie with a broken neck, Cathryn Brown, Fur Kids, Rose Cody, Driscilla Storrs, Pam Glass, Odean Cusak in honor of Sunny Sunshire, Melissa Lombard, Barbara Grabell in memory of Kimmie, Randee Goldman, Lhasa Happy Homes in Los Angeles, Ginger and Doug Warnick, Johanna Charette, Gay and Bruce Yancey, Marty Howard, Traci Tran, Cheryl McDonald and Wyatt Edenfield for their generous donations. But they need a lot more!
Please go HERE if you’d like to send them a check. Be sure to note “Claude, Myrtle and Hiram Galvez” on the form. Or, if you want to donate by credit card, you can do it through PAYPAL HERE.
It takes about two months after we start heartworm treatment before we can list these puppers for adoption so please help us get their funding soon!
These three unbelievably sweet lhasa fluffs (ok, Hiram’s mom is another that got into the terrier woodpile at some time) need to go in for heartworm treatment. They are all HEAVY heartworm positive – that means a LOT of worms clogging their tiny little hearts. If you don’t know what heartworms do to the dog’s heart, take a look at this picture….
This heart was from a smaller dog, about 8 pounds, but it shows how in small dogs, even a few heartworms can totally clog the pulmonary artery and restrict blood flow. Sadly, we lost a little guy last week to vena cava syndrome. We did not even get a chance to start helping this little guy, his heart was so clogged with worms, the blood could not flow and he just died of massive heart failure. I would LOVE to meet up with his prior owner in a dark alley. This disease is so darn unnecessary – just $3-$5 a month prevents the infestation.
So, we really need to get these guys in for treatment! We do the SLOW kill method of heartworm treatment as recommended by the American Heartworm Society. This involves administering 1/2 the normal dose first then the full dose a month later if the dog is doing well. This is the most conservative method, particularly for small dogs with tiny hearts, and the only downside is that it costs double the normal treatment and the dog has to stay in our program for a month longer. Each treatment, including the intial work up, hospitalization for both the initial and subsequent injections, and any necessary bloodwork tests and meds runs around $350. Additionally, we need to repair Claude’s torn eyelid (see pictures below) and remove Myrtle’s horrible, painful glaucmoa-ridden eye. Claude, Myrtle and Hiram would very much appreciate it if you could help them with their fundraising.
Please go HERE if you’d like to send them a check. Be sure to note “Claude, Myrtle and Hiram Galvez” on the form. Or, if you want to donate by credit card, you can do it through PAYPAL HERE.
Thanks for your generousity.
