Juicy Lu’s Tumor

Posted in Juicy Lu Tzu at 5:22 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

JuicyLuCuteFaceThankYou.jpg

Well, as it turns out, Juicy Lu’s tumor was in fact a tumorous adrenal gland.  Yes, it was a very enlarged left adrenal gland.  In a dog of her diminuative size, an adrenal gland should be about the size of a raisin.  Her left gland was the size of a golf ball.  Her right adrenal gland is also enlarged – the size of a green grape, which supports her Cushings diagnosis.

But, we will get her well from the surgery, wait a few weeks, re-perform the ACTH Stim test and see where she is after that.

Huge thanks to everyone.  I’ll be picking her up probably Saturday morning if there are no complications.

Having gone through this exact type of procedure with my own dog, Chach, just five short weeks ago, I am hopeful everything will work out.

AND, ok, get ready, get set, apply to adopt her now.  If need be, we will begin her initial Cushings treatment in about a month but soon after that, she’ll be looking for a forever home.  Now, Cushings is a disease that is not “cureable” but it is “controllable” and since she does not have any outward symptoms, she should be able to live a long, long life with the proper medication and veterinary care.

Juicy Lu is out of surgery!!!

Posted in Juicy Lu Tzu at 3:33 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

And waking up.  She’s very groggy and on lots of pain meds but has survived the surgery.  I have no news on the tumor but expect to talk to Dr. Hottinger later this afternoon and will let you know what she thinks.

WHEW!!

JUICY LU TZU CHECKS IN AT GULF COAST!! SURGERY TODAY

Posted in Juicy Lu Tzu at 11:46 am by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

JuicyLuCheckinginwithTech.jpg

Little Juicy Lu checked into Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists this morning for her surgical appointment with Dr.Hottinger.  She was groomed yesterday, well actually she was shaved down.  Whenever they go in for surgery, I get them shaved since they cannot be bathed,etc for several weeks.  She is really cute!!

I expect to hear something from the tech late this afternoon if everything goes well.  There is, as always, a risk that she doesn’t make it through surgery.  She does have a heart murmur, she does have Cushings, although mild so far, and she does have some weird stuff in that mass.  As soon as I hear, I’ll post it.

Juicy Lu Tzu desperately needs surgery!!

Posted in Juicy Lu Tzu at 11:01 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

UPDATE 7:25 pm, Wednesday, May 30 – WE’RE THERE!!  Boy, Juicy has a lot of friends!!!

We even have a good start on what she will later need for her Cushings treatment.  GO JUICY!1

She will check into Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists at 8:00 am tomorrow morning.  More when I hear something.

JUICY SAYS “YOU PEOPLE ROCK!!”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UPDATED 6:25 PM TUESDAY, MAY 29 - We’ve already raised $ 1520 but she needs another $2100!!
WE NEED TO SCHEDULE JUICY’S SURGERY FOR THURSDAY, MAY 31!!!
JuicyLuTzu2.jpg
This adorable little came to us last month as an “easy” owner turn in. Easy because she was really, really cute, has a great personality, is loving and a true lap dog AND not ancient!!
Unfortunately, we found that she has some serious problems, the biggest right now is that she has a large fluid-filled mass on her liver and desperately needs surgery to remove the mass before it bursts. We did a lot of diagnostics on her to try to determine with out surgery what the you-know-what was in the mass, but the diagnostician did not dare puncture it for fear it contained some sort of infection. So, she’s here in Houston waiting to go into surgery with Dr. Heidi Hottinger, one of the best soft tissue surgeons in the state. Juicy Lu also has Cushings disease, but is in the very early stage – with no outward signs yet. We’re in a race against time though, we have to get that mass out before her body starts showing the signs of Cushings and then once she’s healed, we will start the lysodren treatment.
Juicy Lu’s total surgery is expected to be approx $3600 and is very complicated. PLEASE PLEASE HELP HER. I would really like to get her into surgery this week!!!
Recent Adoptions!! Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apsos
Posted in Happy Tails at 1:52 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue
The last time I summarized adoptions was around April 11, over a month and a half ago.  Just so you know we don’t just sit around looking for ancient and injured dogs to bring in, we also spend countless hours getting these little fluffs adopted!!  Here are the dogs that have been adopted since April 11.
CHARRO WORTH – yes you got it right, our little ICU dog now has a great home in the DFW area.  She has two fluff brothers, Chigger and Chachacha to keep her in line and she needs it!  Thanks to all of you that donated for this very deserving girl to get her through that horrible bout with pneumonia.  After spending several days in ICU, she is now at her new home building strength!!
Chiclet_Day_1.jpg
BIJOU HARRIS AND ROSALITA LOVE WEST – These two lucky gals are now sisters living in the San Antonio area with two other siblings and a doting “mom” and “dad.”
PamSteveDogs0003-BijouRosalita.JPG
The beautiful Bok Choy, wonder dog.  Check out her BEFORE pictures and you’ll see why.  This lucky little gal is healed and is now a resident of the beautiful Kenner, Louisiana.  And she has a pesky younger brother.
BokChoyAdopted.jpg
SWEET MARTINA TURNER.  Turned in at only 5 months old because her mom didn’t have time.  Martina was a Christmas puppy and is a great example of why we aren’t supportive of dogs as gifts.  She is now a happy, healthy little girl living in Katy, TX.
MartinaTurner.jpg
HAMLET FLOWER dug his way into the heart of his foster mom and made her fail fostering 102.  He is the most cute resident of Dallas, TX.
HamletFLower.jpg
MARS HARRIS is one lucky boy.  After catching the eye of an avid shih tzu lover in , Mr. Mars’ new “godmother” made a weekend trip to Houston and back to bring this baby boy home.  Talk about living in the lap of luxury!!
MarsHarris4-7-2007-3.jpg
MAVERICK TURNER had angels looking over his shoulder when his ”prior” owner started having him groomed by Pampered Pets Mobile Grooming, owned by our foster mom Peggie.  After his owner got tired of him, Peggie was right there on her doorstep picking up Maverick within minutes!!  Didn’t take this one long to get picked for adoption.  New resident of Alstyne, TX!
Gizmo_Family-MaverickAdj.jpg
BRIE – we didn’t think this senior would ever find a home.  She makes us know that all dogs will have a chance at happiness.
LEO and DAGEN – this pair is another example of “FOSTER FAILURES.”  So many times, the foster family just falls in love with their little temporary wards.  Leo and Dagen are two lucky little fluffs.
TOOTIE COLLINS and ELMO OAKS are now siblings.  Living in the laps of luxury in Alpine, TX.
TootieCollins.jpg
DAWSON DAVIS – this little boy’s story is so complicated.  He came to us last year, with paralyzed back legs – after surgery at Gulf Coast Veterinary Hospital to remove the disc material, he recovered nicely.  Then, boom, he had bladder stones and had to have surgery.  After recovering from that, a family in Phoenix just couldn’t live without him!
Things are good!!
Posted in Breaking News at 10:02 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue
You all are very wonderful, we have donations for many of these little dogs that WERE on death row.  Now, we need FOUR very special favors – we have the donations, but still need FOREVER homes for the four SENIOR lhasas.  They all seem very friendly and not “uppity” at all.
Anyone?  As soon as I hear that someone can take one of these babies home (TERESA@shihtzu-rescue.com), I will get them from the shelter.  Pictures are below – the four at Galveston – three blonde and one gray.
Please, especially if you’ve recently adopted a younger dog, please consider making a tiny little place at the table for one of these little throwaways.
I’ve been working some horrible hours this week, but will try to get everything, news wise, caught up this weekend!!
TWELVE LITTLE FLUFFS ARE SAFE!! THANKS!!
Posted in Uncategorized at 11:29 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue
As of 9:00 PM, we have enough for EIGHT of these little fluffs.   And with the money we collected at our photoshoot on Saturday, it makes it NINE!
HUGE, HUGE thanks to the following people for their unbelievably generous sponsorship donations for these needy fluffs.
Laruen Kearney, Carolyne Hill, Linda Downs, Ginger Guest-Warnick, Patricia Dadamo, Kaye Wyly,Maureen Skarzynski, Lorna H. Van De Wiele, Dana Woodruff, Martin Howard, Brandy Zender, Odean Cusak, Lael Ward, Susan Lewis, Alexandria Augustyn, ,Lisa Delfini, Brenda Brown, Julia Atalay, Denise Posey, Janet McLeland, Doug and Sally Cameron, Daphne McWhorter, Leslie Warrin, Jill Kirk, Gay and Bruce Yancey, Kathleen Narbut, Kara Saenz.
And, another HUGE thanks to Carla Malone of Pooch Me! in Friendswood for hosting the fun photoshoot day!!
And, remember Violet, the heartworm positive fluff from Bartlesville, OK – she was adopted!!  And, earlier this evening, I received a message from Coton de Tulear rescue in Houston that they may be able to take the two little white fluffs at Harris County.  YEAH!!
So, slowly, we’re getting them covered.  Of course, in all of this, I got this message this evening:
I have a three year old neutered male I must find a home for.
He is registered and I have had him for about one year. So far he has no real health problems. During the summer, I do give him 1/2 of a Chlor-Trimeton 4 hours for allergies. My vet has told me this is not as dangerous and the steroid shots. Be did have some behavioral problems when we first got him, but as he got use to us these have not shown back up. So things about his reaction to such things as belts being taken off, red leashes, and fly swatters led us to believe he could have been abused.
Prince is white with a little beige. He need more attention than a working house- hold can give him. He has a dog door so he is now used to freedom. At night, he sleeps on our bed at the foot of it.
I would like to find a loving single or couple that  would love him and give him the attention we can’t. I am not interested in selling him, I just want him to have a good home.
I live in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Can I just go to bed now?
Vargas.JPG
But, is this little boy not adorable???
We have received offers for other rescues to take a few of the dogs, but not all.  And we seriously need homes for the four senior lhasas from Galveston.  Here are their pictures.  Please email me at TERESA@shihtzu-rescue.com if you are an approved adopter or foster and you can give one or more of these little guys and gals a forever home.  We’ll do all the initial vetting.
Posted in Uncategorized at 8:15 am by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue
I’m going to be out of pocket all day today – have a huge event in Houston – but wanted to give you an update on the Floodgate kids – As of this morning, we have enough  for 2.0 of these little homeless kids.  Thanks to Maureen Skarzynski, Jennifer Gott, Patty Dadamo, Janet McLeland and Kay Wyly!!  And, huge thanks to Odean Cusak for helping spread the word.  As I hear of others picking up some of these little shelter orphans, I’ll post that here.  The overall objective is that SOMEONE steps up for EACH of these little fluffs!!
HELP!! Someone opened the floodgates – we are drowning in dogs!!!
Posted in Uncategorized at 11:03 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue
Hello and welcome to the newsletter for Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue.  You can read these stories and keep up with what is happening on our BLOG
Ok, we know it gets very rainy in Houston in the Spring, but darn it, it’s not supposed to rain DOGS!!
I just don’t know what to do right now.  Every day, we’re getting emails and calls about dogs in need.  Shelter dogs, owner turn ins, strays, everywhere there are needy shih tzu and lhasa apsos.
I just added them all up and since MAY 1, we’ve been asked to take in THIRTY NINE, yes THIRTY NINE, yes, I said 39, shih tzu and lhasas.  I am just so depressed about this, we absolutely cannot save all of these dogs.  But, with your help, we will try to save some.
Now, some of them were adopted from the shelters and we’ve taken them off the list.  Thankfully, some have been picked up by other rescues, and we’ve taken them off the list.  We’ve also told owners trying to surrender their dogs that we really need them to hold off for a month or so – we absolutely must focus on the ones in the shelters who have only days left.  I must extend huge thanks to the local shelters who are bending over backward to hold dogs for 5-8-10 days longer than normal for us.  THANK YOU THANK YOU.
But, we desperately need donations for the vetting for any dog we take in AND, since we have absolutely no foster space available, we will have to board them for at least four weeks.  I cannot even say which ones we will be able to save, but we will save them one at a time as we get donations.  We have run up some horrendous bills in this past month – much of it was not even for extraordinarily large stuff (like Charo), it was smaller stuff, like $450 for Kula Park’s physical therapy and splint, $175 for a Cushings test for Reyna Oak (thankfully negative), another $325 scheduled for an ultrasound for her and much more.  We paid over $17,000 in vet bills just in the month of April – I think that is our largest month to date.  Can you believe this?
So, we’re totally tapped out – we’ve used up all of our adoption fees for this past month, which we usually use for the “normal” stuff like ear infections, eye infections, eye drops, etc.  We just cannot take in any more dogs until we have the funds to vet them and get them healthy AND we have to have a place for them.  Normal vetting, the way we do it, which includes bloodwork, dentals, shots, and other diagnostics, average $370 per dog which is over $100 more than our average adoption fee.
But, the floodgates are wide open and we need help to be able to save at least a few more of these dogs.
We desperately need foster homes – but it does take two – three weeks to get a foster application approved, so we’re looking for sponsors right now – sponsors to cover their vet bills and boarding until we can get them into a foster home.  HELP!!  We cannot promise which ones we can save – we have alerted all reputable rescues that we know throughout the US and are trying to arrange for some of them to take a few after they get vetted.  We will prioitize based on need.
If you can help with this, please DONATE HERE.  Or to send a check go HERE and indicate “May 2007 Intake Sponsorship.”
HERE IS THE RUN DOWN OF THOSE IN NEED THIS MONTH….
We got an email about two at the HOUSTON SPCA last week and by the time we got there early this week to pick up those two, there were TWO MORE.  And the SPCA only transfers them to us when they have medical problems so they DON’T HAVE A CHANCE to be adopted from the shelter.
286117LittleJoe.JPG
286239GeneralTso.JPG
286753Shanghai.JPG
There is one more, but I don’t have a picture yet.
So, that’s FOUR.
Additionally, the Harris County shelter had FOUR that may need rescue by Saturday.  One’s time was up yesterday, so we picked her up already!!   HER NAME IS AUDREY HEPBURN HARRIS.  SHE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION SOON.
A225381.jpg
THESE FOUR STILL NEED OUT.
This makes NINE!!!
The shelter in Galveston has such a sad, sad story, here is the email I received….
I am the manager of the Galveston County animal shelter.  Please allow me to relate a sad story.  Yesterday animal control picked up two horribly matted and filthy Lhasas on a remote road where they had obviously been dumped.  Upon arrival at the shelter the terrified dogs cowered in the corner of the kennel.  It was hard to tell what they were and the smell from their wet filthy bodies was gagging.  I came to work this morning and decided my first task would be to shave down the two dogs so they could be assessed.   To my horror, the underside of the matted fur was crawling with hundreds of maggots.  The fur over the rear of the dogs was so hard that neither dog could defecate. As I released the mats, they began to pass huge amounts of feces, also laden with maggots.  I almost decided at that point to just put these poor creatures out of the misery they were enduring, but did not want them to die in that condition, so I continued.  In addition to the maggots, thousands of fleas covered their poor bodies.  After they were shaved and bathed I found two older, neutered males who were as sweet as can be.  One is blind, or nearly so, and the other has severely inflamed skin and lesions from the mats/maggots.  They both have infected ears and are going to need major care.  We have a local vet who has generously donated services to our shelter and I am going to call him tomorrow and have them evaluated.  These dogs are well fed and someone loved them at some time in their life.
Lhasa_Apso_001.jpg
Lhasa_Apso_002.jpg
Lhasa_Apso_003.jpg
And, later I received this followup…. <
I have an update, the day after the two males came in, a female was found dumped in the same area, in the same condition.  She also had twine wrapped tightly around a leg and has an infected paw.  All three went to the vet and are on antibiotics, as well as medication for the eyes and ears.  The female and one male have ulcers on their corneas, but the other male’s eyes are OK.  All three are sweet dogs and obviously came from the same owner.  The female was thrilled to see (or smell) the other two.  They are safe in my office waiting for an “angel”….
Lhasa_Apso_004.jpg
And this makes TWELVE!!!
Then
We have a 8-10 year old ShihTzu ( we named him O’Malley). He came to the shelter Saturday and went to the vet on Tuesday. He was found to have a yeast and bacterial skin infections. His left eyelid rolls in and the vet will fix that after we get his skin infection under control. His right eye is cloudy and has an ulcer on it. We don’t know how much, if any, vision he has. His nails were so long on had grown into the pad of his little paw. The nails were trimmed while he was still sedated from his dental cleaning and he also got a medicated bath. He is on five medications at this time plus artificial tears. he was also tested for heartworms, lyme disease and ehrlichia. Oh! he is already been neutered. I am sending a photo along with this email so you guys can get an idea about him and to put a face with the name. He isn’t as bad as the little girl Daisy that you guys rescued from us.
OMalley.JPG
OMalley1.JPG
That makes THIRTEEN!!!
And then there was this little matted boy who was turned in to a DFW shelter and was reportedly “nervous” at the shelter so would not make adoptions.  His time ran out at the shelter, so we caved and picked him up.  There was another little matted brown lhasa, but thankfully another reputable rescue picked her up!!  AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION SOON.  NAME IS JOJO HILL.
 Jojo_Shihtzu-TriCities.jpg
This makes FOURTEEN!!
Then there is this little sweetie whose “people” left a message on our voice mail that we needed to call immediately because they wanted to “get rid of” him TODAY.  OF course, we picked up this one IMMEDIATELY.  AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION SOON! – NAME IS LUCCA TURNER.
LuccaTurner.jpg
THIS ONE MAKES FIFTEEN.
(Can you see why I’m depressed?!?!?!)
Then there was a call from a vet in Katy.  Evidently, someone dropped off their 7 year old lhasa girl to be euthanized.  Reason given – absolutely none, just wanted her gone.  She was picked up this afternoon.  AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION SOON.  NAME IS SALLY TURNER.
SallyTurner.jpg
Ok, she makes it SIXTEEN!!!
This little girl was another owner turn in.  Beautiful little girl, isn’t she?  AVAILABLE SOON.  HER NAME IS WHISPER WEST.
Whisper1.jpg
SHE MAKES SEVENTEEN!!!Then there were four adorable little breeder turn ins!!
 Betty.jpg Rosalita.jpgFresa.jpg
Mink.jpg
THEY MADE THE TAKE TWENTY ONE!!!
Then this little pitiful old lhasa
I have an 11 year old spayed female Lhasa that I need help placing. She came into our shelter as a stray, she does seem to be blind and is in need of having her teeth cleaned. A hair cut wouldn’t hurt =). We normally have good luck getting little guys adopted, although I think that its gonna be tough getting her out of here because of her age and her eyes. I’m not sure if her Heart worm status would be an issue getting her into your rescue, I have no problem testing her if you need to know.
MIssy5.jpg
OK, NOW WE’RE AT TWENTY TWO!!
And take a look at this little heartworm positive gal at the shelter in Bartlesville, OK.  Very few get out alive with heartworms.
Violet0189i1.jpg
SHE MAKES TWENTY THREE!!
The rest are owner turn ins that have no pictures.  These are our priorities.  We’ve asked the owners to hold on to their dogs until we get a chance to breathe.
If  you’d like to help us save one or more of these, we desperately need funds.  We need sponsorships of at least $450 each to cover their vetting and boarding fees before we can accept a dog into the program.  We are drowning here and I just don’t know what else to do except ask how many should we save??
TO DONATE THROUGH PAYPAL USING A CREDIT CARD, GO HERE.  Or to send a check GO HERE.  Indicate “May 2007 Intake Sponsorship.”
NOTE:  Some of these can be directly adopted from the shelter.  Most of the shelters have said we could forward their information to qualified adopters.  So, if you want to adopt directly from the shelter, especially the four senior lhasas at Galveston or the heartworm positive gal in Bartlesville, OK, email me at TERESA@shihtzu-rescue.com and I’ll forward the information to you.
To adopt from us, APPLY HERE.
