Nice article yesterday in the Houston Chronicle about why some breed rescues are very, very picky about their adoptions.
http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/4237387.html
Honestly, it’s not really the people that aren’t approved, it is situation. Here are three of the primary reasons.
1. Electronic fences – might be ok keeping a dog in the yard, but what happens when that roaming 120 pound stray comes walking INTO the yard where your tiny six pound lhasa puppy stays. Take a look at TEENA’s Story and see what can happen.
2. Unaltered pets in the household – and no medical reason. Part of exhibiting responsible pet ownership is to do what is right for all of the dogs in your household – there is no reason pet dogs should be left intact. And many health reasons they should be altered young. Do the right thing.
3. Outside pets – a dog that lives outside has an address, not a home. Need I say more? Not where I want little Justine, who we nursed back from the brink of death, to live.
Yes, there are a lot of people that disagree with not allowing a “homeless” dog to go live in one of these situations – well as the Chronicle article says, we are in it for the dogs – period.

I cannot believe it’s time to get ready for Christmas. We JUST now got past the summer dumping season and now we’ve got to get ready for the holiday dumping season.
Why do so many people find it necessary to dump their dogs during holidays? How unbelievably unfeeling. Sweet little dogs that have many times not known any other humans, coldly dropped off at a shelter to face almost certain euthanasia. Why?
Well, we’re going to start our fundraising right now so that we have the capacity to take in as many shih tzu and lhasa apsos as possible during the upcoming Christmas holiday.
One thing we want you all to focus on is our new and improved online store. Here we are putting many original designs on tons of merchandise, including mousepads, Christmas cards, coffee mugs, ceramic coasters, ornaments, t-shirts, sweat-shirts and many, many other items – all featuring stunning designs with lhasa apsos and shih tzu. Even some other breeds – labrador retrievers, beagles, dachshunds, bichon frise, maltese, pekingese, golden retrievers, rotweiller and more.
Check it out: DOGSDOGSDOGS
And, for those of you that love shih tzu and lhasas, we’ve searched them all out from all artists on the site – some are brilliant paintings of shih tzu and lhasas:

If your first words are “how pretty” when you look at my picture, you are right, I am a very, very pretty, mature lady! My foster mom said ladies at my age (8) say mature, not old. I also keep up my figure, weighing in at 14 pounds. I am a happy dog with a good personality, but, at times, my Lhasa attitude kicks in and I like to be the alpha dog, especially when I feel my foster brothers need to be kept in line.
I absolutely love my stuff toys, car rides, sitting on the back porch, and, most of all, walks! I am potty trained to the doggie door, but I prefer not to be put in a crate. I have a low-grade heart murmur, but I am not on medication for it. I am also going through holistic treatments for allergy problems, which are getting under control with proper food and supplements.
Braysia is a beautiful Lhasa that would make a great companion and do best as an only dog or with another submissive dog. Braysia was going to be euthanized because her previous owner did not want to deal with her any longer. She would love to find her forever home where she would receive all the love, care, and attention she deserves! This little girl is a sweetie, but obviously not cherished by her former owners. When she came into our program, she had horrible skin allergies that had not been cared for at all. She also had big tumors on her tummy that were removed and analyzed. Luckily, these tumors turned out to be beign so, she’s ok.
She’s getting over her skin infection, slowly, with some really good supplements from an homeopathic vet, but is still a ways away from being adoptable – perhaps never, even though she’s so adorable.
Braysia incurred $735 of medical expenses for removal of the tumors and the lab evaluation of the tumor materials. To date, she’s received $325 in donations to help defray this cost, but needs another $410. If you’d like to contribute to her extraordinary medical expenses, you can do it via Paypal HERE or to send a check, click HERE. Huge thanks to the following people for the $325 donations – Patty S., Joanna L., Bonny C., Patty J., Lynn W., Sally H., Jennie R.
While in the program, Braysia also needs around $100 a month, for her normal supplements, vet visits and meds. She is looking for five people to subscribe to donate only $20 a month for her. If you are interested in being one of her sponsors while she remains in our program, you can subscribe via paypal HERE or if you would rather send a check, you can do it HERE.
As of today, Braysia has 0 monthly sponsors.

Belva is a beautiful, graceful girl. She is totally blind and totally fearless. She will find her way into your heart. She likes to play ball, even throwing it for herself and finding it, but of course can’t compete with sighted dogs. She loves walks, car rides, and cuddles. Belva will explore and runs into things, but it doesn’t bother her. She just keeps on going!
Personality Plus should be her nickname. Despite limited eyesight Belva explores and lives life to the fullest. She is adorable and adoring, playful, gets along well with other humans and canines, smart and funny, good for her bath, in the car, on walks, and for grooming. She likes to be close and lets you know when she needs a cuddle. Belva likes a lot of attention. She is very aware of her surroundings and even uses her other senses to play ball! She has a perky trot and holds her head high. Belva is a very soft white with gray patches.
Because of her blindness, most adopters are not interested. We will keep her in our forever foster program as long as she is healthy, but she does have monthly and annual vet bills and needs help with those.
