My name is Reno and I am in the Forever Foster program here at Lone Star. BUT, if someone special wanted to adopt me, that would be just fine with me!! I am a 10 year old Shih Tzu boy with black hair. My foster mom says that I am very sweet, very laid back, and that I am very much a gentleman. I will curl up next to her on the couch and get pets every chance I get. I LOVE to have my ears and chin scratched. And, I am particularly fond of tummy rubs. I also like to sleep next to my foster mom at night. She doesn’t need her electric blanket when I’m around!!
The reason that I am in the Forever Foster program is that I am a little older and I have some minor health problems. I have a heart murmur and I also have thyroid problems. I take medicine for my thyroid daily, just like many people do who have thyroid problems. These problems don’t stop me from enjoying life that’s for sure!! I am VERY good about taking my medicine every day as I know it is helping me.
I am a talker and I tend to “growl” a bit. Actually, I growl at just about everything, but usually I am just talking away. I even “purr” a bit and it sounds like a little low growl, but it just means that I am very content. My foster mom has gotten used to these funny sounds of mine. In spite of my “growliness”, my foster mom says that I am a gem at the groomer’s, or when I am getting a bath at home.
I do love my treats and my soft plush toys. I will play a bit in the evening with them, but since I am older, I tend to enjoy a quieter life. I like to go on car rides, but prefer to be in the back seat. I am also doggie door trained. If I am someplace that doesn’t have a doggie door, I let my foster mom know that I have to go out by patting her leg with my paw. All in all, I am a very good boy.

WOW!!! I just KNEW I was special, but to be the FIRST FEATURED FOREVER FOSTER, that’s really something.
My name is Rush and I am a 3 year old Lhasa Apso/Poodle mix. I have a wonderful forever foster home and I love my foster mom very much. She takes very good care of me and my other foster siblings. But she needs to take extra-special care of me as I have some special needs.
I have a serious heart defect that is being treated by the wonderful veterinarians at Texas A&M University. My foster mom works there and I am so glad of that because she is making sure I get the best possible care for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, the problem with my heart can’t be cured and I may only have 1 to 1½ years left to live.
Despite my physical problems I am an active little boy who has stolen my foster mom’s heart. As you can see by my picture I am quite cute. I also love people and am very friendly. But, my very favorite thing to do is cuddle with my foster mom - CONSTANTLY. In fact, if my foster mom doesn’t want me in her lap, or if she stops rubbing my belly, I will sulk. That always gets to her and I usually end up in her lap. I truly am the sweetest little boy!!!

Hello Everyone, my name is Aunt B.
My original owner turned me into a local shelter, and I have been in the foster in this program since 2004. My current foster mom has cared for me lovingly for the past 2 years, though I appreciate all she has done for me I would really love to be in my forever home. She said with my being a knockout blonde with big lips and all, it’s a wonder I am still here. She does say I seem to be kind of a loner, but its only because I want all the attention. I think I would do best if I were the only dog! She says I have no interest in the other dogs or “their” toys. I really enjoy taking naps in everyone else’s doggie beds though! I even learned to sleep in the toy basket from the cat. Though I don’t know any tricks, I learned quickly how to get Moms attention if I am hungry or need to go potty, so I am sure I could learn if you could teach me. I love to go for short walks, and rides in the car. I do have a few health issues that seem to be the reason I am still here. The doctor says I am deaf and I have large cataracts that cause me to stumble sometime. These problems are very minor, and I truly just want to love and be loved forever.

Wow, when we picked Bok up at the pound, she looked horrible. Classic horrible outside-dog black, thickened skin. Obviously came from a breeder situation- stuck in the back yard cranking out puppies- but now her skin is healed, her eyes are recovering from massive infections, but still, she’s a bit too old for most adopters-around 12. ADOPTED!!!!

What are our forever fosters, you ask?
These are little dogs that we’ve taken into our program, and for one reason or another, no one is interested in adopting them. They may just be blind, like little Scottie Oak; they may have a manageable chronic, yet time consuming, problem, like Jennings Galvez’s demodex; they may be a tad grumpy, like Mookie Man; or have had both eyes removed, like Luci, but for whatever reason, no one wants to adopt them.
When we take a dog into our program, regardless of whether it’s ancient, blind, deaf, has mangy skin, missing one or both eyes, or whatever, we stand by them and give them a place to live until nature takes it’s course.
But, of course, the reason most of these dogs are not adopted is the cost of ongoing medicines and treatment. So, they need a lot in their annual funds just to provide the medicines, procedures and treatment for their typical old-age illnesses.
Please check the list of cute little dogs below and, if you can, please help support them in their final days. Unfortunately, we’ve lost a few since October, but still have many, many needing help!!

AGGIE - very nice little SHIH TZU girl. About 10 years old. Missing one eye. Hard of hearing and partially blind. Most adopters quickly pass up the little dogs over 10 years of age. And with Aggie’s missing eye and lack of hearing, she gets no inquiries at all.
ANASTASIA - 9 years old, puppymill survivor, very shy - ADOPTED!!!!!!!
AUDI HARRIS - about 14 years old - left at the county pound. We picked him up on his last day. We thought he deserved a few more. He is very sweet, but at his age and with a grade 5/6 heart murmur, he’ll be here for the rest of his life.
AUNT B - sweet senior girl, limited sight and limited hearing, but oh so pretty. No trouble, loves laps, loves walks, why does no one want her?
BEEKER HURST -8 years old, really bad heart murmur. Not much time left, so we understand why no one is willing to take him into their home.
BELVA - Belva is a beautiful, graceful girl. She is totally blind and totally fearless. Most adopters are not interested in a dog that cannot see, so we’ll most likely be keeping her for the rest of her life.
BERNIE - Bernie is a 11 year old sweetie, turned over to animal control by his family when the kids went to college after he had been their guard dog and companion all his life. At his age, we have little hope that anyone will want to adopt him, so right now, he lives with several other little forever fosters.
BOK CHOY HARRIS - ADOPTED!!!!!!wow, when we picked Bok up at the pound, she looked horrible. Classic horrible outside-dog black, thickened skin. BRAYSIA - beautiful, sweet little girl with a horrible skin infection and a moderate heart murmur. Eight years old, if well kept throughout their lives, would mean that Braysia is only 45 in people years so it’s very disturbing that this little deserving girl is always passed over.
BRIE - little couch potato lhasa girl - around 14-15 years old. It would be nice to find her a forever home for her last couple of years, but we are not hopeful.
BUBBA BURLESON - A little on the blind side (requires drops twice a day), a little on the deaf side, a little on the chunky side but the sweetest older little guy you’d ever want to meet. Previous owners of 13 years just didn’t want him anymore - cannot even think of a reason why.
BUDDY HARRIS - ADOPTED!!!!!!sweet, tiny little four year old SHIH TZU boy with severe arthritis.
CALEB GRAND - nice little old blonde boy. Although in our forever foster program because of his age, 10, he would love a real home.
CHAT AND TERI - nice little pair of shih tzu surrendered together. Approximately 13 years old. No major health problems, but no one has been interested in two elderly little fluffs.
CHENEY - very cute, very nice, very small dog. Another whose forever foster status puzzles us. Very sweet boy, he does have cataracts and perhaps that is why no one is interested in him.
CHRISSY BURLESON - around 12 years old, Chrissy is another miracle dog. Turned over to a DFW area shelter because she snapped at the kids, Chrissy was found with a sock stuck in her intestines. She passed a small part of a sock then went into cardiac arrest while the vet was examining her. Thankfully, he was able to pull her thruough. This girl is gorgeous. But her age, 61 to you and I, makes potential adopters look the other way fast. So she’s here with us and will remain through her golden years.
CINDER - sweet boy, only about three years old. Rescued from the local pound, Cinder has evidently had a stroke and has some significant nerve damage in his back legs. This has resulted in almost NO interest in little Cinder, therefore he is in our forever foster program.
CINNAMON -Cinnamon’s problem is that he has a heart murmur which always makes adopters hesitant. He is an adorable all-white little boy who has been through some difficult times and is truly one of our miracle dogs. But, with his health problems, no one seems to be interested in him.
CROSS WORTH -Cross is around 9 years (equivalent to 49 in people-years) but has some moderate neurological problems and therefore we doubt he is adoptable.
DEBIT - so named because he was left tied to a post in front of a bank. Fairly bad heart murmur, most people are not interested in a dog that has a bad heart. Very sweet, very docile. Only about eight years old, but unfortunately, his heart puts him in the category that most will not want to try.
ECHO MONTGOMERY - Sweet little Echo is a young, small dog, but has kidney and liver problems. There was a time that the vets thought these problems would be terminal; however, with proper diet & supplements, little Echo has made a remarkable recovery.
GEORGIA PEACHES - ADOPTED!!!!!
GOMEZ - Another “young” older dog - only eight years old, Gomez has arthritis and thyroid problems. Another that most adopters just aren’t willing to take on.

HUFFY - Huffy isn’t old -he’s only about six - but he is a challenge - he needs a strong pack leader type mom or dad - and most people aren’t into that much effort. He is a beautiful little dog, but…

KIMI - dumped by her owner two years ago when she was 10, Kimi suffered from horrible skin and is partially deaf and blind. The lack of sight also causes her to be a bit aggressive so her prospects at 12 years old aren’t too good.
KIRBY - nice 11 year blonde old lhasa boy, Kirby suffers from skin problems, most likely from being outside all of his life. It is somewhat controlled by good supplements, but with all the extra effort, he’s not the first choice on any lists.
LADDIE - nice little dog found by a postal worker. Had to have his tail amputated. Technically, since he is only 8 years old, he shouldn’t be on our forever foster list, but for some reason, no one is interested in adopting him. So….
LEO -Nice little boy came from a shelter in Oklahoma. A worker there thought this tired little guy needed a second chance. Leo is hypothroid but we cannot figure out why no one is interested in him.
LUCI - breeder survivor - both eyes were horrible with dry eye and had to be removed. She has a double wink. About 9 years old.
MANCHUI MONTGOMERY - both eyes removed - totally blind - but oh so sweet. Very nice little old SHIH TZU man that really deserves better than he’s received, but at his age, there is little hope for a forever home.
MARIAH - little old lady shih tzu, Mariah was diagnosed with Cushings disease in 2005 and was treated. Unfortunately, she then flipped into Addisons disease. She is a grumpy little lady and that, along with this fatal disease, makes her prospects pretty thin.
MIMS and MERLIN - two of the most beautiful tibetan terriers - these two were turned over to us when their “dad” who loved them a lot, died. They are around 15 years and at this age…..so, they’ll stay in our forever foster home for the duration.

RUBY GRAND -Sweet Ruby is 10+ years old, has a ton of eye problems and only ONE tooth. Regardless, she gulps any food you’ll give her down.
SACHET AND SAMMANDER- Rescued with Sammander, Sachet is 13 years old and has a moderate heart murmur. She is in a foster home right now and will most likely never have a real last name, but is welcome to stay here for the rest of her life. Sammander is Sachet’s “brother.” At 14 years old and with a 5/6 heart murmur, it is understandable why no one will adopt this nice boy.
TROOPER -
WHITNEY HARRIS - ADOPTED!!!!! a very nice, larger, blonde terrier/lhasa mix girl. We went to the shelter to pick up a lhasa, but couldn’t leave this pitiful one behind. Over 10, but still with some significant years left.

Heaven continues to be the sweetest little thing, but her expenses continue to mount. She just incurred another $600 for annuals and she desperately needs sponsors to help with all of her medical bills.
Lone Star is dedicated to helping these little guys, but we need your help to do it. Heaven is a deserving little dog. Remember, our organization is 100% volunteer and gets no funding from any source except YOU.

In early November Heaven had her teeth cleaned and her annual checkup so she could be “fit” for all the holiday parties. Her bloodwork continues to have an elevated white blood count, but not as high as in the past. Since then she has started limping on one of her back legs. We can’t find any external signs of injury and suspect we need to have it x-rayed as it’s been going on for a couple weeks. Can you help us defer the cost of this vet care so Heaven can chase Santa’s reindeer when they come visit her? She thanks everyone in advance!!

Update: October 6, 2006
Heaven is a miracle dog. Read her history below and you’ll see that we’ve been battling “something” for over a year. We still don’t know that it is but believe we are very, very close. The interesting thing is that Heaven doesn’t act sick - but her bloodwork tells us that there is something infecting her somewhere!!
Heaven continues to need tests to determine what is causing her elevated white blood cell count. This sweet little baby girl deserves a good life. That’s why we named her Heaven; we just knew that after the awful conditions that she came from, her new life would be “heaven”.
Although it’s true she’s had a good foster home and good care, we need to find out what is causing her medical problems so that promise we made her to get her a loving “forever” home can be realized. Can you help us help Heaven by donating for her ongoing medical expenses?
To date, we’ve spent over $2,800 on this little sweetie(see the summary below), just trying to figure out what is wrong with her. These cases are difficult - at first, the cost was just $300 for removing her very infected uterus. Then, more meds, more tests, it always seems that one more little vet bill will get her healthy. Now, she really needs your help. Here is the summary of Heaven’s charges through the first week of October

MOOTSIE GARLANDER - another little old man - came into our program with absolutely horrible skin - icky, yellow crusty stuff all over his body - yeast of course. That’s gone, but he also has had to have an eye removed - it popped. He’s about 8 yearrs old and totally blind.

RUBY GRAND -Sweet Ruby is 10+ years old, has a ton of eye problems and only ONE tooth. Regardless, she gulps any food you’ll give her down.
SACHET AND SAMMANDER- Rescued with Sammander, Sachet is 13 years old and has a moderate heart murmur. She is in a foster home right now and will most likely never have a real last name, but is welcome to stay here for the rest of her life. Sammander is Sachet’s “brother.” At 14 years old and with a 5/6 heart murmur, it is understandable why no one will adopt this nice boy.

SCOTTY OAK - sweet little old man rescued from a DFW area shelter. Massive bi-lateral cherry eyes, blind, deaf, but deserves a few good years. Obviously, he has not had any good early years so we owe it to him to make him comfortable, warm and safe INSIDE for whatever years he has left.

WHITNEY HARRIS - a very nice, larger, blonde terrier/lhasa mix girl. We went to the shelter to pick up a lhasa, but couldn’t leave this pitiful one behind. Over 10, but still with some significant years left.
WILLOW TURNER - 11 years old, blind, deaf.
A poem for the old dogs
One by one they pass my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his prime he can’t run and play,
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail,
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn’t belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head
Can’t justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond the cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly and want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
I promise to return all the love I can give,
To You, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.
